Perfusion scientists?

I’m applying for a trainee position and want to know what kind of people they are looking for? Does this job usually go to nurses with more hands on experience of operating theatres etc? I only have lab experience, in and outside the hospital.

Any advice will be really helpful as I can’t find any information online from other perfusion scientists.

I would say that a trained nurse would be a bit over qualified to carry out a single medical procedure.Go for it, you’ll get lots of training

Thank you Billy! I will definitely go for it, and am really hopeful I even get an interview. Just worried about the competition.

Do you actually know what perfusion scientists do?!

TooStressyTooMessy · 05/04/2019 20:55

Have you seen the NHS careers page about it here?

It took me a while to figure out who you meant as we call them perfusionists in my Trust so I would search using that term if you haven’t already.

You’d have nothing to lose by going for it but competition is fierce to get in around here certainly. Nurses apply and would not be considered over qualified (I say this as a HCP nurse myself before I am slated). It’s a very skilled job.

TooStressyTooMessy · 05/04/2019 20:56

As a HCP I meant to say, not a HCP nurse.

Thanks TooStressy, I have already read the NHS careers page you’ve linked, and it was really helpful, but apart from a biological sciences degree it doesn’t give any more information about what kind of experience they’d like applicants to have. Even the person specification for the job doesn’t give anymore specific than a 2:1 in a science/medical BSc.

I also think a nurse would have more hands on experience and would be perfect applicants but I don’t have this experience. I only have laboratory experience.

Ah yes, I see your point. Sounds as if reallybadidea might have more info Smile. I’d also see if there is a contact number on the advert or if there is anyone you can talk to in the department already (sorry if you’ve already done this). The perfusionists I have mostly been keen to explain their jobs as with a niche job like that so few people actually know about it that they can like to get the information out there iyswim? I’ve often thought about doing something like that myself as it sounds fascinating but don’t want to retrain or do the on-calls at this stage in life!

Yes, if you only have lab experience it might be worth trying to think what other transferable experience you can link as the NHS is usually really hot on showing you have thought about working with patients / clients. If there is nothing saying you need specific experience why not go for it though. It depends who else applies at the end of the day. Good luck!
