Clinical waste!

So I was given injections in hospital and told that once the needles were all used to close the box and take it to my go surgery.

Today I tried to hand it over to the receptionist and she said they don't take them and gave me a number for the council. I thought I'd try the pharmacy but they don't take them either.

Phoned the council and they won't take it either, because it's a purple lidded box 🤬

The hospital that gave me it is 40 miles away, and I've been told to take it there. So I've got to make a 80 mike round trip just to drop the pissing box back!!

Sorry for the rant I needed to vent!!!

No way would I make a special trip back to the hospital. Phone them and ask what they advise.

pansydansy · 05/04/2019 16:43

Madness isn't it! I don't understand why the gp surgery won't take it they use needles themselves 🤷🏻‍♀️

Don't even get me started on the council. Don't understand what I'm paying council tax for 🤬

My friend has just had the same issue with her diabetes sharps.

BarbaraofSevillle · 05/04/2019 16:49

Following up from the above link, which suggests that the council is responsible for disposal of sharps from members of the public, on my council website, it says take them to your local health centre or GP clinic.

I think I would be printing out the NHS page and your local council page - look under waste, mine has an A-Z guide of how to get rid of just about every type of waste imaginable, in this case, hypodermic needles, and taking it back to the GP surgery.

pansydansy · 05/04/2019 16:53

This is what it says on the council website. Guess what colour my box is 😩

They told me the gp should take it and the surgery told me the council should definitely be taking it. Ffs I'm so pissed off right now.

Post on your local fb group and ask what others are doing, loads of people must be using them for insulin

Peterpiperpickedwrong · 05/04/2019 17:04

No we don’t take them at the GP surgery I work in. In some areas (high drug use) there are pharmacies that take them, it might be worth ringing a few to see if there is one in your area. Unfortunately it does say pass back to original provider, is there a more local hospital you could contact to see if they would take it for you?

ChristinaMarlowe · 05/04/2019 17:05

So if it was the yellow sharps box they'd take it? Or they won't take sharps boxes of any colour - there appears to be an extra comma ( unless they don't take anything with a lid that is!) Mine are yellow (diabetic) and I've never had a problem. Did they just give you the wrong color box? Hardly your fault if so.

CabbageHippy · 05/04/2019 17:06

I had the same issue when I had to inject myself to prevent blot clots after an op - GP surgery treated me like I was some sort of junkie when I tried to take them in, pharmacy wouldn't take them either

CabbageHippy · 05/04/2019 17:06

@ChristinaMarlowe - mine was the yellow box with a lid on it

ABC1234DEF · 05/04/2019 17:08

Purple lid is cytotoxic/chemotherapy type drugs isn't it? Would explain why they wouldn't take it (purple is chemo where I work anyway although that's animals not humans)

GrandmaSharksDentures · 05/04/2019 17:08

Purple is usually given for cytotoxic medications which are why some facilities are unable to take them

Tryingtogetitright · 05/04/2019 17:09

I've still got my yellow box under the sink - I had injections to stop clotting after birth of DD two years ago and never could find a way to dispose of the box! Tried all sorts and in the end I just gave up!

1idea · 05/04/2019 17:12

Would a drug charity take them?

pansydansy · 05/04/2019 17:18

It's a yellow box with a purple lid. I was given them after surgery to prevent deep vein thrombosis.

GP surgery treated me like I was some sort of junkie when I tried to take them in, pharmacy wouldn't take them either

I took mine in and the receptionist recoiled in horror at my box. 🤦🏻‍♀️

I've posted on my local Facebook page, hopefully someone can help.

@ChristinaMarlowe they take all the other colours except mine. Which is just bloody typical!

MrsCasares · 05/04/2019 18:02

You should have been given a yellow lidded sharps box for the type of injections you had. Purple is for cytotoxic drugs.

Phone your local hospital and ask if they will take them. As a retired clinic hospital nurse I always took boxes from people for disposal. Although I wasn’t happy when people hadn’t bothered to close them and had sharps protruding from the top.

MrsCasares · 05/04/2019 18:17

Or have you tried the community nurses service? They might take it.

EdtheBear · 05/04/2019 22:53

I know the feeling. I had a box after fertility treatment and struggled to get rid if them. The pharmacy suggested the local needle exchange Hmm. I wouldn't have a clue where to find it.

I think I eventually got rid of them by giving it to a nurse friend who took them to work. I also know somebody who struggled to dispose of un-used epi pens, after a breavement.

tornintwohalfs · 05/04/2019 23:14

I was going to say , purple is the wrong lid and that’s why - can you get a yellow or orange lid and replace it ? If the lock is closed you might be able to price the purple lid off (seeing as it’s just your needles so no sharps injuries worries)

Samcro · 05/04/2019 23:19

weird I read the OP and thought I had written iy lol.
this happened to us last year, we ended up waiting till we went to the hospital the next time.....even then the nurse was a bit hmm.
she di take the box in the end.(was a yellow sharps box)
