Splinter emergency

8 yo ds has come home from school with a whole bunch of splinters in his knee. Got a couple out with tweezers but there seems to be a big one right under the skin which has made a lump as well. He’s currently in the bath soaking it but does anyone have any tips on how to get it out...it’s gone really far in

Try Calpol syringe over the entry point. Creates a vacuum which pulls splinter out. Had to do twice on my 9 year old's splinter but it came out

sticking plaster maybe if end of splinter is showing or skin broken should do it

Calpol syringe hasn’t worked :( it’s so far in.

Magnesium paste from the pharmacy, apply generously over the splinter entry point, cover with a dressing and leave for 24-48 hours. It draws it out.

Magnesium Sulphate paste if you can get to a pharmacy - stick some on this evening with a plaster over the top, and then try again in the morning.

Sometimes making a paste with baking sofa & water can help draw them out if they’re well in. Not always though, some you just need to be very persistent with the tweezers. Dc3(6) is a splinter magnet & my ndn & I can often be found jointly trying to remove them from her with her sat on the fence between us.

You have my sympathies. Happened to DD (8) last year, in her butt. Sad
She slid off a wooden roundabout/spinny thing in the playground and it was nasty.
Tried everything. Nothing worked. DH even took her to minor injuries clinic where a self confessed splinter expert nurse couldn't do it. In the end we just waited for a few weeks and kept an eye out for infection. Poor thing could hardly sit down. Then one evening after a bath I noticed the area looking like a boil and I squeezed it very gently. Two massive splinters came out, the size of matches. She's been fine since.

Like others have said, you need to get some Magnesium Sulphate paste from a pharmacy/Tesco/Boots etc.
Smother it on, cover with a dressing or plaster overnight, and it magically draws it right to the surface and is easy to then get out. Sometimes it even comes out on its own when when you take the plaster off!

Vanellope, that sounds awful! Glad she’s ok, horrible things. Thanks for the advice everyone. Will get that stuff first thing
