For mothers day their class made book foldings as presents.
Mine finally got given to me on Tues.
Within seconds of DS handing me the book I caught sight of the word 'whore'...

Ok, books have sex scenes in them...stuff gets missed.
Going for benefit if the doubt here!

The second to back page had a sentence containing the words 'trafficked young girls'...

You don't need to search hard in the third of the book I have to find more of the same...

The covers had been ripped off and books torn into smaller parts for the kids to use but at some point somewhere surely someone should have scanned the book just to check its suitable?

It's not the only one, my DS said his friends found others..this book there are other parts somewhere!

A quick google and the book is called Belle...its about a 15yo girl being sold into prostitution after witnessing a murder....or something along those lines but you get the just...not a book for a 11yo!

So, yesterday I phoned the school, explained what was what, got informed that it wasnt acceptable and someone will call me to discuss.

No call yet...

I'm going to call tomorrow but I'm wondering if I'm over reacting being annoyed because i was at least expecting that call yesterday with a apology and guarantee they will be more thorough and careful in future?

Don’t get the deification of books. I’d much rather a copy of The Davinci Code” was turned into an Interesting lamp than somebody actually read it........

Don’t get the deification of books. I’d much rather a copy of The Davinci Code” was turned into an Interesting lamp than somebody actually read it........

And so many copies of The Davinci Code that were sold that charity shops don't want them anymore as they can't move them on. Much the same with Fifty Shades.

I'm all for keeping and looking after books if they are needed/wanted and for preserving a copy of everything in national libraries as a record of humankind's output, but the world really does not need to keep and preserve all 80 million copies of the Davinci Code for evermore.

well its for looking at not reading so YABU.

@LooksyBooksy if you can be bothered unfolding it it’s actually a pretty good read! Not something I’d let an 11 year old read (or fold!) but the cover is pretty innocent looking so it’s probably why it got used.

It would probably take you longer to unfold it than it would to read it Grin

I was more horrified when I realised the 'old books' being used for art projects had been 1960s editions of the Lord of the Rings.

i have no issue with it, the teacher possibly paid for the books with her own money and got a whole box for a few dollars, she didnt read any of them, maybe checked the covers and titles looked ok and unporn like and that would have been it, just from the title you gave i wouldnt have thought it was anything other than YA fiction
the kids were not given them to read, and were folding them, in to art, its not meant to be opened and dissected or unfolded, its meant to sit on a shelf until your child leaves home, gets married and has children of his own and you then move to a smaller granny flat and finely get to lose it in the move!
if you are really worried someone, like yourself, might open and unfold the art, place it on a shelf in the position it needs to be to show off his art skills, and place glue over the top so the pages, close to the spine, cant be opened any further..
and dont go be "that mother" as i can assure you she didnt read the books, all she was concerned about was making sure the covers had no porn on them and hoped they would keep the kids occupied for a few hours... poor teacher cant win

The international number one bestselling author tells the story of a strong woman trying to be good in a world gone bad, taking us from London to New Orleans and beyond in this powerful, moving historical novel.

She witnessed a murder - and now her life is in danger . . .

Fifteen year-old Belle, though raised in a London brothel, is an innocent. But when she witnesses one of the girls brutally strangled by a client, she is cast into a cruel, heartless world.

Snatched from the streets and sold into prostitution, she is made a courtesan in New Orleans. At the mercy of desperate men who crave her beauty and will do anything to keep her, Belle's dreams of home, family and freedom appear futile.

Are Belle's courage and spirit strong enough to help her escape? And what will await her at the end of the long, dangerous journey home?

Praise for Lesley Pearse

'With characters it is impossible not to care about . . . this is storytelling at its very best' Daily Mail

'Lose yourself in this epic saga' Bella

'Glorious, heartwarming' Woman & Home

'An emotional and moving epic you won't forget in a hurry' Woman's Weekly

thats what book depository says about it, that to me doesnt sound bad and heres 2 covers neither look bad, so if the teacher seen either of these she wouldnt have had any concern

I covered an art lesson for year 9 a while back. They were using vandalising books for a collage. Wondered why they were swapping pages and giggling. Quick shufty revealed the teacher had left something like one of the fifty shades inspired tomes and the kids were finding all the juicy bits. She claimed it wasn't hers and she just grabbed it from a charity shop, but come on...

I think I'd rather I was given a book for Mother's Day than a book chopped up, folded and made into something else.

@DontMakeMeShushYou: I also am a qualified librarian, and couldn't agree with you more.
