Please help me figure this out? How to get Irish letter to UK, organising from UK?

I'm very tired and sluggish today (fibro) and the wheels of my brain are spinning but going fucking nowhere on this.

I need to send a request to Irish police from where I live in London. I need to enclose an envelope so they can put the police cert in it to go to me. I wanted this envelope to be registered, to get best possible chance of it making it to me safely.

However, I suddenly and stupidly only realised I can't get Irish stamps. Furthermore I then realised it's maybe not just stamps I need - I want the letter to be registered, so how can I organise this?

What do I do?

It's for a visa. If it goes to schedule and letter doesn't get lost, I should have it in 5 weeks, allowing for postal times. If it gets lost I don't have enough time to start whole process again.

I'm slowly going mad, I don't know what to do.

International signed for.

Why not ring them up and ask them what they would like you to do? I expect they've had to deal with similar situations before.

OhFFSPIL · 04/04/2019 15:58

And a wee laugh for you too.

AbsentmindedWoman · 04/04/2019 16:44

International signed for doesn't work for the return element - because the police in Ireland have to post the certificate back to me.

That's what I mean, I can't prepare a stamped, addressed, registered envelope from Ireland for them to pop the document in?

Dara did give make me grin though I totally do still write it as IRELAND on all mail correspondence Grin

I've tried calling the Garda station numerous times over the last few hours, it just rings out, which isn't helpful.

Oh I get you now OP. Hmmmm.

Just googled and I think you can buy Irish international stamps, don't know how long they'd take to get here but I'd imagine it'd be quick.

Phoning anpost might help too, if you can't get the garda, or the embassy of the country you're getting your visa from.

Maybe put a post on the Craicnet board on MN and maybe an Irish mumsnetter will post stamps to you?
Bit long winded way of doing it but if all else fails ..

Rockbird · 04/04/2019 17:19

I didn't even realise I did that big Ireland Grin

Try phoning the county town station. Most local town/village stations are unmaned on certain days or times.

You wait ages for an Irish Stamps thread, then two come along at once:

I’m in Dublin, if that’s any use to you. If you want to send your letter on to me, I can do a return envelope and drop it all into the Garda station?

AbsentmindedWoman · 04/04/2019 17:38

Yeah that's my thread too Mockers the thing is I realised after I posted it, that the stamps are only half the issue - because even if I buy stamps from An Post, that won't be a registered SAE. I really need it to be registered or tracked or whatever to ensure the police cert does not go missing somewhere between Ireland and London, or I'm totally fucked timewise.

I initially assumed I could do this all online via a centralised office for a fee that would cover secure tracked mail. Nope. It all has to be done in writing, and there's no fee.

Thank you Magicstar1 for your very kind offer! However, it has to go to the police station in Ireland local to where I lived there, which isn't Dublin. Thanks again though.

From looking at An Post, you have to hand the item over the counter in order for it to be registered, so that won’t work.
Maybe a prepaid courier label?

AbsentmindedWoman · 04/04/2019 17:48

Oh, I hadn't thought of a prepaid courier! That's a great idea! Off to investigate Smile
