I have lots if coins to pay into my DS's bank account.
I know I can pay bagged amounts of coins but can I pay random coins in too?

Like 40 pence of 1 penny's?

Yes I reckon so. You need those cash bags for each type of coin and I think you need to be able to tell the cashier how much is in each bag but they will weigh them to see if they tally with the amounts you say there is.

NatWest have coin machines that count it for you but you need to be a NatWest customer , or know someone who is and would give you the money IYSWIM . I assume other banks have similar although our local Barclays and Halifax do not .

Our loyal RBS has a coin counter for customers to bank coins into their account. The machine counts the coins and gives a voucher for you to take up to the counter

Bank of Scotland take loose coins. I found about 20 of the old round pound coins, and they accepted them over the counter and put them in my account.

Does anyone know if Lloyd's have a coin counter?

Some HSBC branches have them. Depending on what accounts you have, if you could get the coins into any bank with a counting machine, you can then transfer the same amount over to DSs account to balance things out.

mclaleli · 04/04/2019 16:30

Tbh I would wait and make the bag up to the £1, not sure why I would though!

Fraggle84 · 04/04/2019 16:44

I'd use it in the self serve machines in Asda towards the food shop then give them the money in bigger coins or do an online transfer into their accounts

TheFlis12345 · 04/04/2019 16:46

My HSBC would only take complete bags of coins, they wouldn’t take 40p in a copper bag that should have totalled £2. Is there a Metro Bank near you? Anyone can use their coin machines, it prints a slip you take up to the counter and they give you the money in notes etc.

QuestionableMouse · 04/04/2019 16:48

You can with lloyds but the want it in full amounts. (£1 rather than 40p)

My branch doesn't have a coin counter.

Might help?

BiscuitDrama · 04/04/2019 16:51

I would also use it in a supermarket self service checkout and then pay into the bank account with bigger amounts.

DIZZYTIGGER87 · 04/04/2019 17:05

I had no problems paying in in HSBC...the cashiers face did drop slightly when she saw how many bags I was pulling out, but it was all counted and in correct bags, and they had no issue with part bags (or not full amount).

And this was at the end of the day...they weigh them all (which is also what I did for full bags to check).

caughtinanet · 04/04/2019 17:08

I'd check with the branch before you go if you're making a special trip rather than reply on anecdotal experience at other banks and branches.

dementedpixie · 04/04/2019 17:50

I'd pay in the full bags and leave the odds and ends at home.
£2 -£20
£1-£20
50p/20p -£10 (not mixed though)
10p/5p - £5 (not mixed)
2p/1p - £1 (not mixed)

Whynham · 04/04/2019 18:47

Lloyds accept pennies in any random amount as long as it's sort of bagged up. Well, my local one does.

Leeds2 · 04/04/2019 19:15

I add up, and bag, the money to be paid into the bank (Co op) for a local charity.
You need bags, which they will give you on request. The bag clearly states how much of each coin can be in each bag. Coins can't be mixed, so all pound coins in one bag (up to the limit), all 5ps in another bag etc. Bags don't need to be full. The cashier will weigh them to check that the amounts you say are correct.
If it isn't a lot of money, I would think they would just count it at the counter for you.
I bank with Lloyd's, and my branch doesn't have a coin counter. But it is very small!

Bayleyf · 04/04/2019 19:30

Go to MetroBank, if you have one close.

You don't need to be a customer, you just tip all the coins unsorted into the machine. They'll give you it back in notes or bigger coins.

Redcrayons · 04/04/2019 19:33

I usually tip them all into the self serve machine at Tesco. Can you 'buy' the off him?

DisgraceToTheYChromosome · 04/04/2019 20:32

The coin machines in Asda charge about 11% afaik.
