Best shops for older boys clothes when they are too young for the 'teenage' shops?

The title is probably slightly awkwardly phrased, but I'm looking for recommendations for shops where the kids/boys ranges go larger than an age 12/13. DS is tall for his age (and solidly built), so I'm looking for clothing ranges that go up to older sizes, whilst still being age appropriate (he is 10) - he prefers plainer t-shirts rather than large slogans/graphics.

My DS is 8 and in 13/14 clothes, I feel your pain!
Not found anything on the high street, but have a look at the sturdy kids website, I found it good for uniform! They do other clothes too.

WhenDoISleep · 04/04/2019 14:58

Thanks - we got his school trousers from that website, I will check out the casual clothes.

In exactly the same boat with a 10 and 12 year old! My go-to's are Zara Boys, Abercrombie, Next and many many sports tops eg Under Armour, Nike and rugby shirts. They'd live in this kind of gear if they could. Boden occasionally, particularly for jeans and summer pyjamas and you have Johnnie B for older kids obviously. Gap for good quality t-shirts and underwear/socks. I'll be watching closely for inspiration ☺️

Try H&M - most of their kids' clothes go up to age 14+

katcatkat · 04/04/2019 15:05

H and M go to 14+ sizing and are good for basics. Asda george do a 13-14 as well. We have found that xs mens is a similar size to 13-14 except the length tends to be a bit longer which is good for my boy but might not help you.

Connieston · 04/04/2019 15:06

My eldest is 5 foot 6 at 11. I get him small or medium men's T shirts and tops. He's just about still fitting in 15-16 school trousers and at weekends he's in mens joggers. Just go straight to men's for basics.

Connieston · 04/04/2019 15:08

As an aside I'm astonished how weeny school trousers are, even my average but tall nine year old is in size 10-11 ... I can't remember when their age matched the labels... Maybe I just have lanky sons!

H&M

BertieBotts · 04/04/2019 15:13

Mountain Warehouse and Decathlon. Not all sporty clothes in there, they have stuff which is fine for casual wear. DS1 loves H&M as well but I find them overpriced for the older kids' stuff. Marks and Spencer goes up to 16 years for their kids' ranges.

ExpletiveDelighted · 04/04/2019 15:15

Mine's the other way round, he's always needed clothes 2 years below his actual age, he started school in age 3 trousers. We find Gap, H&M, Next good for basics in the 12-14 age groups.

WhenDoISleep · 04/04/2019 15:21

Thanks, some good ideas of places for me to try - most of them I don't normally shop from so don't automatically think to try them. I wondered whether to look at the men's ranges - think I might get a few basic t-shirts to try.

School trousers are funny things in this house, DS1 has never worn the same size as his age, whereas DS2 (average height but very skinny) wears a size smaller than his age and I have to pull the waist elastic as tight as possible to stop them falling down.

To add to the discussion, we have found Land's End quite good for tops and trousers, but they stop at 13-14 in the UK. John Lewis do stock clothes in older ages, but they tend towards the designer name type ranges, rather than their own brand which we found did well in the last few years.

What height is he, do you know?

BertieBotts · 04/04/2019 15:39

They tend to stop at age 14 because larger sizes are simply adult small/XS so you want to look at adults' ranges if he's bigger than size 13-14 children's. You can still find plain clothes in adults' ranges, look at shops which tend to do activewear, outdoorsy type clothing or simply basics, like supermarkets.

BiscuitDrama · 04/04/2019 15:42

That’s what I’m thinking, Bertie the H&M range goes up to 5’8”. I’m thinking a 10 yr old can’t be taller than that though.

WhenDoISleep · 04/04/2019 15:45

He is between 150 - 155cm (haven't measured in a while), but hasn't hit a major growth spurt yet either. Shoes are another touchy subject - wears adult size 8 Shock.

That's useful to know Biscuit re H&M.

Next goes up to 16 and lansends biggest size is pretty generous. My nearly 13 year old also has a few things in a men's size small.

RunAlexRun · 04/04/2019 15:59

I like Fat Face for my 10 year old sons clothes

sm40 · 04/04/2019 16:05

Fat face only go up to 12-13, which is a shame as live their stuff.
I've been to h and m and primark do a 14-15 range.
Also get label stuff from sports direct or tk maxx as they do some stuff in 14/15 age.
My ds is 12 but in 14+ clothes.

bigbluebus · 04/04/2019 17:11

Next boys clothing goes up to age 16 (176cm height). Always served me well for my DS.

ExpletiveDelighted · 04/04/2019 18:08

Next is only online for the teenage stuff though, which seems silly, just as they get old enough to go shopping by themselves. Sports Direct is another good call.

BIWI · 04/04/2019 18:10

Oh God I remember those days! TopMan do (or at least did!) smaller adult sizes and plenty of plain stuff there. Although it's expensive.

Petalflowers · 04/04/2019 18:16

I have tall teens as well.

A lot of stores like M and S and Next do taller ranges online. Also, I started buying men’s clothes small, and 30” trousers (or whatever it was).

T-shirt’s were even sports related or brands such as Saltrock, Next, Superdry etc but in men’s sizes.

My just turned 17 year old is in extra long Next trousers so I feel your pain.

BertieBotts · 04/04/2019 20:37

European sizes go up in centimetres and the biggest one is usually 164 which is equivalent to UK age 13-14.

Curlybrunette · 04/04/2019 22:01

We struggle with trousers as the fashion (round here, not sure if it's everywhere) is for the skinniest of skinny trousers, so my DS who is about 5'9 now (aged 13) wants skinny trousers, but men's small are the right length but too baggy for him.
