Fire alarms and Fire extinguishers at home

We don't live in the Uk, so it won't really affect you.

However, here we now have to have a home fire safety check once every 15 years (only started in 2016, so our first).

We failed it....

We live in a normal area not prone to fires or anything, in a normal house.

We have 3 fire alarms currently in the house. This is not enough apparently. We have to have a fire alarm in every room apart from kitchen and bathroom. Currently have in hallway upstairs and downstairs, and in Living room. So need to add to bedrooms and dining room.

We have a fire extinguisher in cellar thats 6kg outside oil heating room, thats fine. However in main house we just have a 2kg in hallway as didnt really think people even had them in their house usually so figured we were being over careful. Nope, have to get another 6kg fire extinguisher which is rather large and add to the wall.

We have 3 weeks to remedy these to sign off paperwork apparently.
Do you all have way more fire equipment then we thought? I thought 3 alarms and 2 fire extinguishers in an average size house was perfectly normal.

We just had our fire safety check a few months ago and we passed, the fireman said the same thing about fire alarms in every room except kitchen and bathroom (which we have, plus carbon monoxide alarms in the bedrooms), fire extinguisher in the kitchen and one upstairs on the landing, and a fire blanket in the kitchen. We live in a wooden house though so fire risk is higher (we also have to have ladders on the outside of the house so we can escape from the bedrooms)

This is interesting. What country do you live in?
I wish we had more fire alarm type precautions as DH thinks we have enough, but I don't.
We only have one alarm in the utility, one in the hallway and one upstairs but I think we need another one in the open plan, dining/kitchen/sunroom area. We also have a small fire extinguisher in the utility.

The local fire station is about 10 miles away and volunteer run.

We are in central Europe.

I agree, its a good thing, so don't particularly mind. But I had always thought we were fairly good with checking alarms work regularly etc and like I say we do have extinguishers, but one is too small.
I guess I'm just surprised how much they now deem 'essential' to prevent or warn you in the event of a fire I guess.

They also checked the heating system was up to date with its bi-annual service, and that the chimney has had its twice per year compulsory sweep.

It was like a full-on dental health check equivalent for the house

We have 2 smoke alarms and a carbon monoxide detector near the boiler...

Natsku · 04/04/2019 14:37

Oh that reminds me, I need to call the chimney sweep!

Natsku · 04/04/2019 14:37

(I feel so Victorian saying that)

Natsku - our chimney sweep invites himself!
We literally get a note through the door saying something like 'Jim will sweep your chimney this year on March 1st and November 1st between 10am-12pm. Please note this is compulsory by law blah blah, but will still cost you €32.50'

We (UK) just one fire alarm per floor and a carbon monoxide one in the kitchen, we had to have it inspected two years ago when we rented it out and it passed then. Everywhere seems to have very different rules, when I lived in Spain we had no fire alarm in our apartment or even in the building. I asked our landlord about it and he seemed really surprised that I'd want one as apparently it's unusual to have one there! I did refuse an apartment with window bars though.

We usually get a note through the door saying that they will come on X day at whatever o'clock but last year we forgot about it and weren't in so this year they wrote on the note asking us to call and arrange the time.
