Do you salute/whistle at magpies?

If so, can you please explain why you do it? Have just spent the day out with a friend and she did this a lot. I think there were maybe two pairs of birds flying about and she both saluted and whistled at them several times while we were talking. I found it a bit 'look at me' and she couldn't tell me why she did it, except that her family did. Nothing on web that I could find.TIA

I say "good morning your majesty" to single magpies, my mum says it and I just carried it on! Only under my breath though ;)

Magpies And Superstition
Of all wild birds, it is probably the magpie that is most associated with bird superstitions. However, most superstitions regarding magpies are based around just one bird. Throughout Britain it is thought to be unlucky to see a lone magpie and there are a number of beliefs about what you should do to prevent bad luck.

Magpie

In most parts of the UK people will salute a single magpie and say “Good morning Mr Magpie. How is your lady wife today?” By acknowledging the magpie in this way you are showing him proper respect in the hope that he will not pass bad fortune on to you. By referring to the magpie's wife you are also implying that there are two magpies, which bring joy rather than sorrow according to the popular rhyme.

In Yorkshire magpies are associated with witchcraft and you should make a sign of the cross to ward off evil. And in Scotland a single magpie seen near the window of a house is a sign of impending death, possibly because magpies are believed to carry a drop of the devil’s blood on their tongues or in another legend because magpies were the only bird that didn’t sing or comfort Jesus when he was crucified.

Other things you can do to prevent the bad luck a lone magpie may bring include doffing your hat, spitting three times over your shoulder or even flapping your arms like wings and cawing to imitate the magpie's missing mate!

As the well known rhyme "One for sorrow, Two for joy, Three for a girl, Four for a boy, Five for silver, Six for gold, Seven for a secret never to be told." shows it is only seeing a lone magpie that brings bad luck and groups of magpies are said to predict the future. There are many different versions of this rhyme with some counting as high as 20 birds.

I always salute a single magpie and like it when I see more than one .. likely daft but I don’t walk under ladder or select row 13 when I have a choice.

NicoAndTheNiners · 04/04/2019 14:06

I salute them.

ChopinIn10Minuets · 04/04/2019 14:13

I always say hello and wave to single magpies as well. Glad I'm not the only superstitious nutter on here! I tend to weave it into the conversation in company and make a bit of a joke of it - 'oh, there's a magpie, hello Mr Magpie how's the wife and kids' with a cheery wave.

ILiveInSalemsLot · 04/04/2019 14:15

We have magpies in our garden all day long! I would go mad if I had salute or greet them every time I saw them. I just ignore them.

Ratonastick · 04/04/2019 14:18

I always salute single magpies, don’t know why or where I picked it up.

I read an interesting interview with Terry Pratchett once. He started asking people at book signings about magpie superstitions and discovered there were hundreds of different ones (salute, whistle, spit, good morning, etc) and all kinds or regional variations and different versions of the “one for X, two for Y” rhyme. It becomes the basis for the Magpyr family in (I think, someone correct me please) Carpe Jugulum.

Defender90 · 04/04/2019 14:18

I salute any single magpie I see, someone told me it kept bad luck at bay, and I love superstition.

MargoLovebutter · 04/04/2019 14:22

I used to salute single magpies, as I grew up in the countryside and that is what people did.

I am now absolutely certain that the sight of a single magpie has no control over my destiny or anyone else's, so I don't do it anymore, nor any of the other superstitious things that people do to try and control the future!

golddustwomen · 04/04/2019 14:22

Ok mine is completely bonkers but I touch something green if I ever see a magpie. I will go out of my way to touch something. Not sure when it started or why because non of my family do it! All I know is I've been doing it for as long as I can remember and I feel like if I stop now something bad will happen... told you it was bonkers!

MirandaGoshawk · 04/04/2019 14:23

Wow! Thanks all. I had no idea people still did this kind of thing. It seems like a way of taking control (doing something to ward off potential bad luck).

I always say Good morning Mr Magpie when I see a lone magpie. I say it quietly if there are people around.

I have no other superstitions whatsoever so I don't know why I do this.

fourquenelles · 04/04/2019 14:48

Yep when I see a single bird, I salute and say "Good morning Mr Magpie, how are you and your children?" As PPs have said to ward off bad luck viz the song:

"1 for sorry, 2 for joy,3 for a girl ad 4 for a boy,5 for silver, 6 for gold and 7 for a secret never to be told"

I used to live in a place that was overrun with them so it didn't happen often.

fourquenelles · 04/04/2019 14:49

sorrow not sorry

ProfYaffle · 04/04/2019 14:49

"good morning mr Magpie how's your wife and children" and a forelock tug for a single magpie. Or hang around until you see a 2nd one.

KaterinaPetrova · 04/04/2019 14:51

I salute them.

By way of scratching an imaginary itch above my eye so I don't look a proper looney.

It's so well ingrained now I don't think I could ever stop. I also never walk under ladders.

Hanumantelpiece · 04/04/2019 15:00

Just saw autocorrect put a weird word in. Corvids was what I meant.
Is it just me that is totally unsuperstitous?

Parttimewasteoftime · 04/04/2019 15:12

When I see one I touch green never seen. Two I blow a kiss as it reminds me of my deceased GM and DD xx

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 04/04/2019 15:22

I salute Mr Magpie "hello Mr Magpie" also pretending to scratch eyebrow and ask where is wife is.
Always or sorrow will happen!

pumpastrotter · 04/04/2019 15:29

I salute and say 'good morning mr magpie, how's your wife and family?' when I see one, but not when I see several and no more than once per magpie. Not sure why I do it, I've always done it, my mother always did it and I feel weird if I don't until I do. It's practically a reflex now.

I also follow the old, old poem of 'one for anger, two for mirth, three for a wedding, four for a birth, five for heaven, six for hell and seven for the very devil himself'. I read into when I was younger and it stuck for whatever reason

CoffeeCoffeeTea · 04/04/2019 15:32

One for sorrow, so I always salute a single magpie.

I also don’t walk under ladders, if I spill salt I throw a pinch over my left shoulder!

GlitterPixie · 04/04/2019 15:33

No I never heard of this before Confused

BlueMerchant · 04/04/2019 15:34

I salute them all and ask 'how's your family?'.
I feel happy if I see two together but I still salute them both.

hsegfiugseskufh · 04/04/2019 15:37

I say morning to them. think its a superstition thing but Ive always done it!

we have a few magpies that seem to live or regularly visit our back garden, and the same at my work so I probably look like a crazy woman talking to the birds all the time.

I think they're lovely though.

hsegfiugseskufh · 04/04/2019 15:41

I must say though the ones in our garden seem almost tame so I am wondering whether the previous occupants were feeding them or encouraging them in!

MamaLovesMango · 04/04/2019 15:45

I salute single magpies and get quite excited when I see 2 together. I have been known to salute unidentified birds pigeons of a similar size, just in case....

It seems like a way of taking control (doing something to ward off potential bad luck).

Totally this. When I was going through a terrible time, I got quite obsessed with it because I was just so desperate for some good luck/news. Not so obsessed at the moment but definitely ingrained behaviour!
