I'm considering a move out to be nearer family and wondering how people find the commute? I'd be doing it 3-4 days a week..

Do you get a seat, are trains fairly reliable , are you hating your life after doing it for so long, or has it worked out ok?

Thanks Grin

It’s a really long commute once you factor in the journey to station and work at both ends. I did a similar length temporarily and it was sole destroying. Mine is currently just under 2 hours each way door to door and I wouldn’t go longer and find it quite tough. Also south western railway are being utterly shite at the moment- look at real time train data to see what the delays and cancellations have been like for the route.

sole destroying

Did you have to walk there and back? Grin

Thanks. I would have 10 mins to station at the Bournemouth end and 20 mins to the office from Waterloo

amusedbush 😂 Also actually true- my feet are wrecked.

Peeblet- with the extra time on the end, you’d have to think really carefully about your quality of life, ability to get back for childcare etc. I find with the Waterloo trains you have to be there in plenty of time as it takes time to get through the station so that adds a bit extra as well.

I used to do New Forest to Waterloo, so 20 min drive to station, 1hr 45 on train, 20 min walk the other end. I only did it 3/4 days a week, term time only and had flexi hours and to be honest it still broke me after 3 years.

Such a waste of your life spending 5 hours a day on a train. Usually got a seat on the way up so you would have no problem finding one at Bournemouth but to get a seat on the 5.35 home, I would need to be there at 4.50.

Basically by the time you get home, eat, it’s time to sleep and do it all over again.

No, I would never do it again and I consider the 3 years I did it for an absolute drain on my life! I now live in Bournemouth and somtimes need to be in London for work and drive to Southampton Parkway and get the train from there, which is a lot quicker and more frequent train options.
