I have had this for 16 years, been to multiple gps and been given all sorts of treatments over the years. None of which have improved my situation. It constantly burns and stings, which is only relieved by scratching. Any idea what it could be

Could it be dermatitis? I had problems with eczema on my eyelids a few years back which caused skin to flake off. It was horrible. I used to wash my face in the shower which I think was a huge contributor. I now wash it over the sink with luke warm water. I also used this: www.amazon.co.uk/Eucerin-Skin-Face-Cream-50ml/dp/B000KU93GM/ref=sr_1_13?s=gateway&keywords=eyelid+cream&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&qid=1554335639&sr=8-13

I had this my whole life too. I used to use prescription steroid cream when I was younger and use hydrocortisone sometimes now (I know I know...). What keeps it at bay for me is Aquaphor Healing Ointment. It can't be Vaseline, it can't be a fancier ointment with lanolin, it seems that it has to be Aquaphor and I have to put it on every night. I've been using it for a few years now.

No clue if it will work for you – weirdly it doesn't work on other parts of my body which get flaky and itchy – but it's not expensive compared to other things which might make it easier to try. I tried so many things! I think for me it was just finding something my eyes could tolerate that protected them and let them heal.

If my eyes get bad because I skip a night or two then they take a while to heal. It doesn't work overnight.

I have had this problem on and off for years-Eczema is what the doctors said and gave me a steroid cream. I have not used that in years, currently I use Childs Farm Moisturiser lotion, it actually really works fabulously and better than most of the expensive creams I have tried in the past. You can buy it online or in most supermarkets, it's only a couple of pounds and it's so so good. Honestly I love the stuff and have bought so many for family/friends, they in turn buy it for others as well!

I d had what sounds similar in the past.

It was so sore and I got fed up of using steroid based cream on my eyes so found that a lot of people had success with manuka homey based products.

I tried Dr Organic rescue cream and it worked a treat.

Child’s farm is also very good

How do you wash your hair? Shampoo and conditioner residue and the fragrances and junk they stuff into it can be incredibly irritating to sensitive skin - and if it's irritation rather than true allergic reaction, it's quite possible to have it only on the eyelids where the skin is thinnest.

gamerchick · 04/04/2019 16:28

I'd second the shampoo and conditioner. It took me ages to figure out why my forehead went all scaly and flaky.

Topical steroid withdrawal?

BellMcEnd · 04/04/2019 16:32

Have you been seen by a dermatologist?

IdaDown · 04/04/2019 16:43

Agree with PPs. Stop using your normal skincare and shampoos, hair dyes etc... get either Child’s Farm or MooGoo. Something kind, low irritant with no SLSs, EDTA etc...

Give the low irritant stuff a month/six weeks. If nothing improves go back to GP and ask for a referral to a dermatologist. Show them the new products/regime you’ve been using.
