Small north east facing garden with DC.

Is there anything you can do with a house with a north east facing small garden?

How can you make it nice for children?

Or is it best to just have a different house?

I feel you!

I think lawn is inescapable but use a shade tolerant seed mix. Climbers and foliage that are shade loving, plus on some walls you’ll get the sun for a large part of the day. Scented plants like lily of the valley and honeysuckle.

What’s in there now? What’s the soil like?

I’m planning one big semi circle raised bed with a bit of lawn. Plus eventually some decking to cover the great big ugly concrete slab next to the house...

Thanks. It’s more of a courtyard than garden.

It’s slabbed and on different levels.

two words for you - artificial grass. There are some brilliant ones out there now - great for kids playing on, paddling pool on in the summer and softens the area. We had a small garden in our old place - back half was in shade - fake grass (in an oval) for the kids to play on and planters in the corners for colour.

Thankyou.

I’ll look in to artificial grass. Also need to level the slabs somehow.

It’s quite depressing being so small and having sun only in the height of summer that dissapears at 5pm and nothing at all at other times of the year.

you can definitely brighten it up - paint the fence a light colour, ensure any paving is a light colour too, colourful planters - all of that will really make a difference

Thanks dinky

It's probably better for playing out in, in the heat of summer. Cooler and less likely to burn.
