Flying after brexit (maybe)

So, we live in NI but have Irish passports. The plan is to fly to England at the end of June, so very possibly post-brexit. We can go via belfast or Derry but it's much cheaper with better flight times to fly out of Dublin.

Both dh and ds1's passports expire in July (ds's before we return home). I know you can travel domestically on an expired British passport, but not sure about Irish...

If we could get away with it, we wouldn't renew either. I've seen some stuff that implies minors can fly without Id for domestic flights at least.

DH considering passport card, but this is only for travel to EU, EEA or Switzerland.

Can anyone shed any light? This is our main holiday so if we can get away without renewing for another year (we normally go abroad) we will.

You need to have six months on your passport so renew them.

See, I don't think that's strictly true...

If going from Dublin, yes we would need to renew ds1's though. But Dh would be ok. I think?

I would contact the passport office

Then why are you asking for advice if you already know the answer?

NeverTalksToStrangers · 03/04/2019 07:39

Because I'm not sure about the passport card, for one. I'm not sure if the almost expired/expired Irish passports would work on UK flights. I'm also unsure if brexit is likely to change any of this.

Are you normally so tetchy when proved a bit wrong?

If your holiday is that important to you just renew the passports.
We're going to France on 12th April. When we booked a few months ago one of the kids passports was due to have less than 6 months left on it and we decided to just renew it for peace of mind.

Some airlines seem to follow their own rules anyway so even if one person tells you it's ok the person at the check in desk might tell you something different and you end up in a big stress at the airport on the day

🤦‍♀️

You’re right OP. You don’t need to renew your passport. You can travel safely on its expiry day. Have fun.
