Going to Japan tomorrow - last minute advice and must dos/donts/buys

3 weeks, 3 adults, 2 teens and a tween.

Going to Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto

Booked Disney Sea and Universal. Will go to Nara and visit the deer and as many temples as we can.

Can any experienced people advise on must do's etc? What's good to buy out there? Where should we avoid?

Got JR pass and will get a Suico.

Thanks!

When I was there, found it surprising how cash orientated it was (was 2012 mind) and that ATMs had high charges for withdrawals. Bare this in mind, I found my currency card almost useless.

Go to an onsen, unless you are heavily tattooed or have hang ups about getting naked. They are heavenly.

Make sure you go to the restaurants where they cook on the tablet in front of you.

Go karaoke singing

Go to the electric city in Tokyo I now forget the name.

There's a lot to see that is hard to access if you have no one with you who speaks the language.

Beware buying clothes and shoes, a small out there is a bloody extra extra small here and when I’ve bought shoes there they are very narrow.

Oh and I would second what pp said about cash

Akihabara is the electric town. If the kids like anime/gaming, they will love it.
Use the ATMs in 7/11 stores. There are a million of these of Japan, not hard to find. They will take your card and you can even have all the settings in English.
If you want to use an Onsen as a family, there are a few around where you can wear swimsuits and all go in together. The naked ones you have to segregate.
Have okonomiyaki in Osaka. It's delicious.
If you're non smokers and it really bothers you, be wary. Lots of restaurants etc do allow smoking. Sometimes these areas are segregated but sometimes not, especially in smaller places.
Go and see the monkeys in Kyoto, they walk around freely.
Have a fab time!
