Bike for 4/5 yr old?

woollysocksaresexy · 02/04/2019 12:39

I'm looking for bikes for my DC. The bike we got DC1 was far too heavy compared with the size of her, and she is addicted to her stabilisers! So we are trying to get something a bit more suitable for her and dc2.
I have seen Isla bikes recommended a lot but they are way out of our price range. Also, are there any bikes that pedals can be taken off /put on as dc2 loves her balance bike and I don't really want to get her stuck with stabilisers like dc1!
Sorry if there is a special topic, I couldn't find it!

Get a second hand islabike. Thy hold value really well so you can sell it on after a year or two

I'd absolutely go for a second hand Islabike - ds had them until he was on an adult size bike, and they cost us about £30 all in from 4 to 10 as the resale was so good.

You can take the pedals off any bike to let them scoot along

Pretty much all ‘real’ bikes you can take peddles off

Isle or frog - buy second hand and resell when done. You’ll hardly loose any money at all!

Ok, I think I get the message here! As islabikes aren't sold in shops, is it easy to size them online? Do they come up true to size?

Yes, if you measure according to the instructions on the website, you can't go wrong.

There is an Islabikes sell and buy group on FB which is really good

Evans do the Pinnacle range which are nice and lightweight, and a fraction of the cost of an Isla bike! We have been very happy with the one we have.

Frog bike slightly less than isla bike - super light weight.
My 4/5 year old easily transitioned from a frog balance bike to a proper frog bike (pedals)
Again they hold their value well.

Frog bikes fit the bill.
You can take pedals off most (all??) normal bikes and certainly can take them off a frog bike.
They are growing in popularity so starting to hold their second hand value, but still cheaper than an Isla bike.

We got a Frog bike for 4 year old DD, expecting to take the pedals off. The bike shop advised us to just leave the pedals on and get her pedalling straight away.

Within a couple of days of getting the confidence to cycle without someone holding her she cycled 6km (including up a big hill).

The Frog bikes are beautiful and my DCs' have been admired by people who have seen them. I have never seen an Islabike to make a comparison though. In the end we decided to get Frog because we were able to get it at a local shop and get it properly sized, and they will do a free service after a year, whereas we are nowhere near Islabikes.

The man in my bike shop recently recommended a new brand called Squish.

He's a bike nut so I'm sure they are good.
