Elderly dog under the weather/ poss eaten something - WWYD?

Before I go into detail, I just want to say that she's insured and I am keeping an eye on how she is, and may take her to the vets this evening.

However, as I am not out on a long dog walk like I usually am, I thought I'd post this question here too in case someone tells me something I may not have thought of.

My collie is 11 and very fit and healthy. However, over the last few days she has been doing a lot of reverse sneezes and also gagging ever so slightly. She is now off her food this morning. She is now sleeping and snoring, which is also unusual. Her poo is normal.

I am convinced she has eaten the tip of a badgers tail. She picked something up the other day which I told her to drop but then remembered where she'd dropped it the day after and ate it before I could stop her. It had a red end, and kind of grey fur on the other. The red was almost berry coloured, but if it was a berry she surely would not have been as interested as she was. The berry bit was round and smooth.

While she has been gagging a bit (not loads though, its quite sporadic) she has also otherwise been pretty much her normal self. Lively and enjoying her two hour walks, she also joined DH for a 6 mile run last night although she did stop a couple of times to 'cough.'

I am a bit more concerned that she seems unwell today but also wondering if she is likely to regurgitate whatever it is that is bothering her. She's fully insured so money isn't an issue, I am just hesitant to rush her to the vets immediately in case it's something very trivial. I struggle to work out what to do with animals and medical stuff a bit (and it doesn't really happen very often.)

She needs to see a vet.
Without seeing her in person all anyone could do here is guess, and frankly it's not worth the risk.

Guessing is fine! I’m basically killing time before she can get an appointment. I’m wondering if anyone has had similar scenarios they can share

I work in emergency vets and I’d advise to get her checked due to age & fact she’s not herself today. Let the vet work out whether connected to eating something or something else going on. Hope she’s better soon Grin

I don't understand why you're killing time and asking on here - no-one can give you the answer. The vet is the only person who can tell you if it's trivial or not. I hope he is ok.

Please just take her to the vets, that is what they are there for and you say money isn't an issue. I really don't understand why you haven't. I hope she is ok.

Have you looked inside her mouth to see if there is anything stuck in the roof of her mouth? Something could be lodged up in there that is causing her irritation.

Reverse sneezing can be stopped by gently cupping your hand over the end of her nose.

JemimaPyjamas · 02/04/2019 14:26

I've not yet taken her as they have a drop in for urgent appts in the evening, hence we can do it then - I'm not leaving her uncomfortable or struggling, don't worry!

@Palominoo nothing in her mouth, I checked when I first realised she'd gone back and eaten whatever it was I stopped her eating the day before. She's been lively and then lethargic (relatively lethargic, she is a collie after all) on and off since then too, inc going for a long run last night. She's not wanting to go out today though which is unusual, which is why we are now thinking vets as opposed to it being something that sorts itself out

Let us know how you get on.

JemimaPyjamas · 03/04/2019 14:56

They did a thorough examination, feeling for lumps and bumps, looking in her mouth, temp etc and found nothing. But, she's still not herself. So, we have to take her back on Friday morning if there's still no change and they'll sedate her to do more tests.
Am a bit worried!

So pleased you saw the vet and have my fingers crossed for Friday morning.
