Best speaker or similar for spotify - pref rechargeable or mains?

Batsypatsy · 01/04/2019 22:17

The only way I listen to music these days is on spotify. What's the best way to play it? Currently using bluetooth on Dab radio running off mains but have to keep reconnecting bluetooth on phone every time I listen? Otherwise seems to drain my phone battery.

I've a Samsung A3 2017 but may upgrade in a month. Also have an ipad II that won't run latest spotify so no good.

Do I need Alexa? Or just a bluetooth speaker constantly connected by bluetooth?

I can't spend much. And I don't want to use batteries, would rather have one rechargeable through micro usb.

Any recommendations?

Thanks

We have a Betron bluetooth speaker. It's small so the bass isn't brilliant but it's much better than phone speakers. And cheap!

Simonfromharlow · 01/04/2019 22:25

I also have a betron speaker. It's Bluetooth, rechargeable and only £5.99 on Amazon. I love it!!

Batsypatsy · 01/04/2019 22:25

Yes previously I had a small speaker, but the quality wasnt great and then eventually it became very difficult to connect to ... I had to turn bluetooth on and off repeatedly.

I think I'd like something with more umph if possible.

UE Boom - waterproof and 360* sound

Nacreous · 01/04/2019 22:28

What's the budget in terms of not much? Speakers vary so extraordinarily in price, from a fiver to many hundreds of pounds!

Batsypatsy · 01/04/2019 22:41

Hmm .. I'm not sure .. I guess under £50?

I absolutely love my Alexa and use it more for music than anything else. The quality of the speaker is surprisingly good. We have the echo downstairs which is definitely better but the dot, in the bedroom is 0retty good. Agree with you that a lot of the speakers with Bluetooth tend to get iffy after a while.

I have also heard that the Google version of Alexa is good.

Batsypatsy · 01/04/2019 23:07

I have to admit I know very little about Alexa or the Dot ... can someone explain in simple terms? How would it connect? Is the Dot enough?

The Alexa / google devices plug into the mains and you set them up at the beginning to interact with services like Spotify. Then you either use voice commands or your phone to get it to play music (I still can't figure out how yo get Alexa to access my playlists so if I want one I just set up from phone).

The speakers are surprisingly good for their size and price but depends what you are looking for. Not good enough for a house party but absolutely fine for at home with the family. Echo (about £50 on sale) is bigger and better than the dot (around £30 on sale). There are also.kore powerful, and expensive, versions.

I assume Google sound quality is similar, But don't know.

The convenience is fab. Ds has started asking for music before bed so we are thinking of getting him one for his bedroom too. He can choose his own songs. We also set it up t9 turn off after a certain amount of time, which is nice when listening to relaxing music while falling asleep.

BlingLoving · 01/04/2019 23:25

Oh, and I don't use thus service, but you can set it to play a song to wake you at a certain time!

Ooh we have two WonderBooms from Ultimate Ears.
£50ish, excellent sound quality, really easy to pair. And apparently waterproof. Never tested that aspect...

MajesticWhine · 01/04/2019 23:48

I have a a wonderboom and I absolutely love it. I take it into the shower, the garden, on holiday etc. Good sound and so easy.

Batsypatsy · 01/04/2019 23:55

What's the battery life like?

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 01/04/2019 23:57

Majestic is it ok in the shower?! I'm so scared!! I don't want it to die!

tumpymummy · 02/04/2019 00:19

I needed a speaker to play Spotify instead of my phone (which sounded rubbish) so I got a Google pebble. The smallest one for apx £35-£50 (depends what offers are on). I have it set up in the kitchen (mains) and love it. I can be cooking and I just say 'google play Queen' or whatever and it links to Spotify and plays. I also have a Spotify favourite playlist so just sometimes ask it to play that. Plus with the Google I can also add things to a shopping list. And because the kids also have them in their rooms I can broadcast/tell them when dinner is ready. I find the sound quality with the google home mini is fine, but hubby is pickier about sound quality and prefers the bigger google home.

Batsypatsy · 02/04/2019 00:56

tumpy that sounds great. Maybe that's what I need ... I'm not massively picky about sound but a little bit I guess ...

So the Google pebble connects directly to spotify instead of playing it via my phone then bluetoothed to the speaker?

MajesticWhine · 02/04/2019 07:17

Re the wondeeboom, yes it's fine in the shower although disclaimer my shower is over the bath so there is somewhere to put it without it getting totally soaked.
I have recharged it twice (possibly 3 times?) since I got it at Christmas so the charge lasts pretty well.

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 02/04/2019 11:03

Thanks Majestic.

Another benefit of the wonderboom is that it's not smart so it's not listening to recording everything that goes on in the house!

HerBigChance · 02/04/2019 11:12

I've got an Anker one (£30 from Amazon), pairs very easily, you can use your phone to turn the volume up and down. Excellent sound and great battery life.

DisgraceToTheYChromosome · 02/04/2019 11:21

I have the Anker Soundcore 2, fantastic piece of kit. I mostly use it in the HGV, as it's better than the vehicle speakers even if there's an aux jack or Bluetooth. Incredible battery life, something like 12-18 hours play time.

Batsypatsy · 08/04/2019 16:53

I decided on Google Pebble. They're giving them away free with Spotify Family btw.

I love it! Very responsive, finds whatever I ask it for. The quality is fine for what they cost too.

That's great to hear. Am tempted to get one. We are already family members so I guess we won't get the freebie.

Batsypatsy · 08/04/2019 22:34

It's available to current family members too. Only until 14th May I think. Have a look on the website ..
