Can anyone help me with fencing? (Includes awful diagram)

We are moving house next week and at the moment the garden is unfenced.

I need to fence it to secure the dog and children. I was planning on putting 6ft fencing around the perimeter of my garden however I have been told that I wouldn't be able to as it ajoins to a road and also would block some of the light that enters the surrounding properties.

Also to complicate matters the garden is actually the front of my house so you'd wallk down the garden to the front door.

I have tried looking it up online but I can't seem to find anything that gives me a definitive answer.

I have attached my terrible diagram to try to help explain.

Can anyone tell me if I would have any issues with what I'm planning to do?

Who told you you couldn't do it?

buckeejit · 01/04/2019 19:42

I'd not want to look at a 6ft fence if I was 1-3.

4ft fence? I would have thought 6ft would be ok on main rd side as it's sort of your back garden. Could you enclose part of the garden?

Looks like planning permission is required if it's over 1m next to a road.

If its next to a road, you can only go to a max height of 1m without planning permission.

Look at the planning portal for you local council.

Fences that adjoin roads may need planning permission, but that's not the same as again at the rules.

And I can't see how as six foot high fence would impact the light in surrounding properties - they just wouldn't be able to see your lawn anymore.

WhenEnoughIsEnough · 01/04/2019 19:48

Yeah that's what I was thinking I wouldn't want to make the neighbours look at a fence.

See I also saw that planning permission would be required for over 1m but the little road is there just to serve our 4 properties and there are bollards at the end to stop vehicle acess onto the main road.

Yeah, around here you aren't allowed to out up a new boundary fence or wall over 1m in height at the front of the property bordering the road. Would a 1m fence be enough to keep the dog in or would it jump over?

ATowelAndAPotato · 01/04/2019 19:50

Well the neighbours don't have a right to have a view of your garden, so I wouldn't let that stop you.

I too though you were only suppose to have 1m High next to a road, but I see plenty of hedges etc higher than that, so maybe you could plant something inside the fence line if you want a higher boundary?

WhenEnoughIsEnough · 01/04/2019 19:51

I was also thinking of maybe a 4ft fence but I've got a rottweiler and not sure that 4ft would totally contain him.

I was going to do hedges with a chain link on my side but obviously would have to wait for the hedges to grow.

Hedges aren't subject to the 1m rule so you could have a 1m fence and then hedges above that

Palominoo · 01/04/2019 19:55

Make sure you have approval from your local Council before you spend any money otherwise you might be made to tear it down and your money will be wasted.

What about making a smaller section of your garden with a high fence to confine the dog?

I know off several people that have had to cut hedges down as they have obstructed the view of the road when approaching the junction, in this case road safety will trump the desires of the home owners.

OP you need to look in to the legalities of this properly.

WhenEnoughIsEnough · 01/04/2019 19:59

I think I will definitely have to get into contact work someone from the council I was just thinking if I could get it done before I move in it would be better.

The fence/hedge whatever ends up going there would not obstruct the view of any tragic as the road literally just serves our 4 properties well 3 really as my acess by car is just before the "little road".
