I'd think you'd want some transport, but Dorset is lovely. Bridport is a busy little market town, you have Dorchester with the dinosaur museum, the Jurassic Coast, Weymouth for a real bucket and spade beach, lots of little pebbly beaches....WestBay, Lulworth, Ringstead
Portland...lighthouse, quarries sculpture park

Monkey World and the Bovington Tank Museum too.

Love, love, love Bridport. Have friends from there and it's a great place.

If DC like proper sandy beaches they may be disappointed. Otherwise there is lots to do and the coastline and inland valleys are truly beautiful.

Lots of lovely things to do in bridport!
Kiosks for food in west bay (a half hour walk either through a field or along a road from the main town) market days on wednesdays and saturdays so you can visit a variety of stalls along the streets. Plenty of quirky shops such as Instant Redress (don't be fooled into thinking it's a party shop when you first step in, there's so much more), regular busses to other beaches such as Lyme Regis, Charmouth, and Weymouth as well as other towns such as Dorchester (museums here), and Yeovil (good selection of shops although much the same as Weymouth just without a beautiful sandy beach).
You can either camp, caravan, or book into one of many b&bs too. I'd definitely holiday there

Forgot to say - there are lots of woodland areas about a 20 minute drive away too, perfect for exploring with the children. And an alpaca farm in mosterton that you can book to walk the alpacas with!
