Can anyone help???
My beautiful mixed race granddaughter has a terrible problem with her scalp, it's almost like cradle cap, but flaky with puss like sores. We have tried everything but nothing head worked, she's 14 and very conscious of it and gets very upset.
Anyone any idea how to cure this please?

Show GP firstly. There may be prescription only stuff she can try.

Decent sympathetic hairdresser who knows about caring for mixed race hair could be a useful source of information?

Perhaps try Nizoral shampoo?

SueAlice · 01/04/2019 19:14

Thank you.

She's seen the Doctor and Dermatologist,

Sounds like Psoriasis. I have it on my scalp. I'm prescribed a steroid Scalp liquid and coal tar shampoo. Works wonders! Sadly if it is Scalp Psoriasis, it will never go away completely

Faithless12 · 01/04/2019 19:21

What is she putting on her hair? Has she had it chemically treated? I would think that something she has had in her hair has irritated it/ burned it.

RaspberryBubblegum · 01/04/2019 19:23

Or could be allergic to shampoos/conditioners if she's changed brands recently? I scratch my head until it bleeds if I use the wrong shampoo. Took me so long to find ones that were OK for me. Good luck I hope you find the source! Flowers

Food allergies/intolerance? I had psoriasis but it was linked to my then undiagnosed gluten intolerance. Once I was diagnosed and on gf diet it went away. Sadly of course not all psoriasis is caused by something so simple. Best of luck

I had an awful dry itchy scalp that started in my teens and continued. I tried every product on the market and safe no improvement. After 20+ years of itchy, flaky scalp I tried a non-foaming shampoo. I now have a healthy non-itchy scalp. It must have been the foaming agent that irritated me.

Hi
What Shampoo do you use?

OP posts:
RaspberryBubblegum · 01/04/2019 20:42

That for me op? I can use medicated shampoos (vosene medicated or tgel medicated) or oddly enough the cheap antidandruff shampoo from asda. No idea why just that one, it must just be missing the one ingredient I must be allergic to 🤷‍♀️ hope you manage to get to the bottom of it! 💐

I have scalp psoriasis and it was at its worst when I was a teenager, so I really feel for your granddaughter. Then I had to treat it with steroids. Now when it flares up I’ve taken to pinching my DDs’ cradle cap shampoo: Capasal (or something similar) which has coal tar and coconut oil. Smell isn’t the best and it’s not a cure but does help our scab-headed family!

CarpeVitam · 01/04/2019 21:04

@eurochick , what shampoo do you use?

toucantoo · 01/04/2019 21:04

I have psoriasis. It flares up when I'm stressed and was really bad in my teens/early 20s. As others have said, nizoral or t-gel. Let it sit on the scalp for a few mins after lathering. Before the shampoo, try rubbing olive oil or similar into the scalp and leaving it for 30 mins. That can help loosen the plaques. Probably need to shampoo twice to remove the oil.

Steroid lotions can help too. I discovered I was coeliac in my 30s and since I cut of gluten, it rarely flares up and when it dies it's really minor so there may be something she is eating that is causing a worse auto immune reaction. Try cutting dairy and gluten for 2 weeks.

I have had scalp psoriasis for my whole life and the only thing that works is Dovobet steroid gel, it literally makes it vanish for 2 weeks at a time- miracle!

@CarpeVitam I use L'Oréal Lo shampooo. After years of trying fancy brands it's the one that works for me.

Thank you Smile
