Do we need a wardrobe?

Exactly as the title.

We have a bedroom which is currently being redecorated. It featured 30+ year old faded wallpaper, so its time was up.

We currently have a triple wardrobe there. It came with the house purchase and is frankly awful.
At the moment the wardrobe is directly to the left when you open the door, and to the right is the door to en-suite. Therefore it makes the bedroom entrance basically a corridor.

A wardrobe can't really go anywhere else in the room due to large windows on two walls, and where the bed has to go.

Im considering just replacing wardrobe with a chest of drawers, one that has 6 drawers, 3 either side. So its pretty spacious. Similar to the ikea hemmes one.

The bedroom is currently our guest bedroom. Its has family stay for around a week at a time as we are overseas. So storage only needed for them to unpack suitcase. Its likely to be used in for any future baby and child when the time comes.

As a guest, would you be happy without a wardrobe? Do we really need one for a baby in future?

Without a wardrobe the top of the drawers will also provide a bit of surface space to dump random crap for guests and can add mirror and lamp above.

I've always thought people who put babies clothes in a wardrobe were quite mad! It's a colossal waste of space. I always put my babies clothes in chests of drawers.

We don't have a wardrobe in our guest room. I just put some hooks up on the back of the door to keep my mum happy if she wants to hang anything. There also isn't a wardrobe in my inlaw's guest room, and I don't find it an issue.

Guests are likely to have items such as dresses or jackets which are best hung up for a few days rather than creased in a drawer or bag. Would a smaller wardobe work better as not much hanging space would be needed?

My DSs manage without hanging space, although that may change as they get older and need more formal clothing.

In those circumstances I would say no. The drawers sound find, for either guests or a baby/toddler. Is there any scope to have some sort of hanging rail, in case your guests want to hang dresses etc up?

You can probably get something suitable from Ikea, and it will probably fold down or wheel around when not in use. Or I think they do a standing mirror with a small amount of hanging space behind.

When I travel I rarely hang anything up, only if it’s formal wear. Could you get a collapsible clothes rail and store it somewhere (loft, basement, under the bed) and put it out when guests are staying?

You definitely don’t need a wardrobe for a baby. But a baby will grow up and you will eventually want hanging space for their clothes. Depends how long you’re planning on staying in the house really.

As a guest I would be ok with not having a wardrobe. You could maybe put some hooks on the back of the door in case anyone who visits wants to hang something up?

A baby would be fine without a wardrobe, its really not necessary. However if you stay in this house long term you will need to find some way of handing clothes up as the baby grows into a child. This is years away however so I wouldn't worry about it until you get to that stage.

Will there be room for a few coat hooks on the back of the door?

I'd definitely think you can do without - we only have one small one between us - I think it contains a suit and a couple of 'nice' dresses and jackets. Everything else goes in drawers.

WalterIris · 01/04/2019 16:34

Ok, so 50/50 at the moment.

We can have hooks on the back of the door.

Coat storage not really needed, it isn't a hotel room so guests hang coats, and store shoes in normal coat area downstairs by the door.

I could put a standing mirror, rack or similar in a corner, but thought it would be nicer to have a chair there with lamp in case family want to escape downstairs a bit to read or whatever.

Its a decent size room, but not huge by the time bed is in there as a corner was cut out to add the ensuite donkeys ago (which is actually handy now as guest room)

I have some folding hooks from Ikea in my dressing room that are about 6 cm wide so you can hang quite few items on them and they fold back neatly when not in use. I also have some extra large matching ones that are about 15 cm (I use them for bags) so plenty of space for guests to hang clothes, if needs be.

You can also get slimline wardrobes where the clothes hang on a rail from front to back instead of sideways.

I have an Ikea double towel rail high on the wall in my guest room, with lovely white wooden hangers on it - it doesn't get in the way at all but it gives guests somewhere to hang things.
