If you were a teen/young adult when Sex and City aired on tv..

What do you think of them now?

I was a teenager when it was originally being aired on tv and I thought they were awesome with lives I'd love to have when I would be in my 30s.

Now I am in my mid 30s, the ages they were during the series, they look really.. well quite sad I suppose.

Whilst I still enjoy re-runs of the show because it was amazing and I do realise how groundbreaking it was at the time, all that drama and whining (I'm looking at you Carry) and all those different relationships/men just makes them look like teenage drama queens rather than sophisticated career women in their 30s.

It's funny how I used to think they were so cool yet now I'm their age I wouldn't want their lifestyles at all now.

Samantha was great though! Grin

Likewise. I thought they were seriously cool... something to aspire to Blush. Now I'm mid 30's and can't imagine living that lifestyle!

ILoveMaxiBondi · 01/04/2019 11:35

Was baffled by it/them when it first aired. Friends ranted and raved about it and I tried so many times to get into it and enjoy it but found them all to be really hard to like! Grin

Tried to watch it again recently as an adult and it made me want to tear my eyes and ears off! Grin even the theme tune drives me insane and I have to scramble for the remote to change channel.

Nuyearnume · 01/04/2019 11:45

I loved it feel like it’s more a representation of your 20s than your 30s though!

I think it reads very differently when you realise that Carrie is meant to be a nightmare. When I watched it later in life I felt quite sorry for Big!

I feel I somehow ' missed' that stage they were at in my own real life!
I think the fact they all had money made the difference to their lifestyle.

SpoonBlender · 01/04/2019 11:54

Saw an episode again recently - so shallow, and they're all so desperate. And yeah, gay representation was very, uh, of the times? Awful.

IHeartKingThistle · 01/04/2019 11:54

I liked it but don't now.

Yesterday I was in a brass band concert and we had to play the theme tune. Horrendous!

GoldenPineapples · 01/04/2019 11:56

Do you mean the stereotype of "the gay best friend " and gay clubs they went to always had very flamboyant "queens" as representatives of gay men!

I was older, closer to their ages and I loved it!!! A lot of it was based on true situations, very New York!! I agree though going back to it perhaps hasn’t dated so well

WeepingWillowWeepingWino · 01/04/2019 12:00

conversely, I was in my 20s when I watched the OC and thought the parents were so sorted - I watch it now I'm the same age as the parents and still think they're a billion times more grown up than me!

Interesting question!
Now I watch it and laugh at some of it, but I was a teenager when it was first on and I can see how some of my friends have adopted the SATC drama filled, high maintenance approach to relationships. Perhaps we all watched it too much Grin

LinoleumBlownapart · 01/04/2019 12:12

I was a teen or young adult when it aired. I could never get into it, too much bouncing about, hair flicking and high pitch squeaking.

FormerlyFrikadela01 · 01/04/2019 12:16

I'm in my 30s and used to thin it all seemed so glamourous except Miranda who seemed a bit cold.... now I'm older Miranda is the closest to a realistic character for me. They're still all disgustingly priveliged especially in the movies.

CookPassBabtridge · 01/04/2019 12:17

I still love it now I'm in my 30s but can't imagine living that lifestyle, tires me out just watching them!

MephistophelesApprentice · 01/04/2019 12:18

Gave me a profoundly negative view of any woman who was in to fashion, back when I watched it (I was quite young, mind you).

It's teeth achingly cringeworthy now.

GoldenPineapples · 01/04/2019 12:20

They just never seemed happy. They would sit in the coffee shops complaining they didn't have a man and how much they just wanted "the one," then when they had a man they would equally bitch about the relationship and pick it apart.

Carrie with Aiden was particularly awful. There she met a nice man who didn't give her the drama she was used to (and hated) in a relationship. She wanted a man who would commit to her but when he did she picked it all apart.

I think it's aged quite badly. I was in my late teens/early 20s and it did seem quite groundbreaking back then. I suppose knowledge and openness about sex, sexuality and experience is much more prevalent now, and those subjects were the undercurrent of most of the episodes. I don't really enjoy it now, it's representative of a time, both for me and for society.

Yutes · 01/04/2019 12:23

I remembered thinking Carrie seemed really cool.

and then I grew up and realised what a nightmare she was. Grin
Och, it’s good entertainment. It’s a bit dated now but at the time people weren’t talking about women wanting and having sex.

amusedbush · 01/04/2019 12:25

I was too young the first time around but I did buy the boxsets and binge it when I was about 17/18. I absolutely loved it!

Now I'm not too far off 30 myself, I do find that it has aged badly and Carrie is an absolute nightmare but I still like to dip in and out of the odd episode.

SwoopTheJackpot · 01/04/2019 12:26

I thought they were glamourous when I was a teen. I'm in my 30's now and cringe for them. They're a bit tragic and they think they're so sophisticated. They never really grew up or moved on. They were still behaving like 20 somethings in their 40's/50's.

HoldMyGirl · 01/04/2019 12:28

Carrie is probably the most irritating character in tv history

Chocolatecoffeeaddict · 01/04/2019 12:28

I used to love it and rewatch the box set over and over again when I was about 16. I wouldn't want their lifestyle though and I don't find it realistic.
They were all in their late 30s/40s and acting as though they were in their 20s. Nothing wrong with that but I don't think that's most peoples' lifestyle at those ages and don't think a lot of people would aspire to it.

GlitterPixie · 01/04/2019 12:30

It hasn’t aged well at all
