Would someone smoking weed in your flat annoy you?

Or, should i just let it go. I advertised for a flat mate and this you woman was so eager to escape a bad home life I caved in the end. Its rented and has been by ne for years. Flat mates come and go sonetimes they are on the contract sometimes they arent it depends if its due to be renewed. Its nothing unusual in London and, tbh, its such a good deal most people stay for over a year. Anyway she wore me down I was worried about the afe gap, she wasnt, I was worried about her affording it but she can walk to work from here. Lastly, I told her no smoking the place has being decorated and I stopped two years ago so now i cant abide it. She told me she would smoke outside. Well, its not just fags its weed every night. Its blowing back into the bathroom window even my neighbours have complained about it. Its in my hall cos she must be smoking it in her room and its on her dressing giwn it wafts around with her. I mentioned it but she looked at the glass of wine in my hand and said its not half as bad as me drinking every other night. She has a point. Should i just take the stick out of my arse and ignore it?

This would not be ok with me. The smell is strong and gets everywhere. Smoking outside doesn't help. It's illegal and antisocial. And the wine is completely irrelevant. If only your name is on the contract so much the better, you can tell her to leave.

It's a no-smoking flat and she is continuing to smoke. Time for her to go.

Don't get drawn into some idea that you're somehow not cool enough because it's weed she's smoking. Weed stinks. I'd be furious if someone smoked it in my home. And I'd probably lose my job if I turned up to work with the smell on my clothes.

I’d be more worried about being asked to both leave the property if your neighbour starts complaining to your landlord and the council.
It’s completely out of order; she can do what she wants out of the flat but when it’s making your and your neighbours house smell it’s not ok.
Also it is illegal and how would you feel if her dealer camw to your house? Police are unlikely to be interested in personal use but as it’s in your home too it could effect you.

The smoking is outside as far as I can tell but it’s blowing back in and it’s also on her dressing gown which she wears constantly. I haven’t even thought about the landlord the only time I hear from her is when the boiler is due it’s update or if something goes wrong in the flat

Her smoking may or may not be as bad for her health as drinking is for yours. That's irrelevant.

The issue is that her behaviour is antisocial and illegal.

If she is going to smoke week she needs to make sure that the smell doesn't get into the flat and the neighbors do not complain. She absolutely cannot smoke in her bedroom.

If she objects tell her the landlord is unhappy and so are you. Can you just get rid of her?

Apart from the fact that it is an unpleasant habit I would be very wary that the neighbours will complain to your landlord, and then both of you will be asked to leave. I assume your landlord is OK with you subletting BTW?

If that’s what you call it yes she’s oerfectly fine. It’s a big three bedroom started off as three friends years ago and people have always come and gone. It’s a London thing. She’s be more outboutvif I kept asking her to put names off and on contracts. It’s looked after by me very well we hardly have any interaction. I’m very close to my neighbours and he looks pretty official in his prison officers uniform I will have to introduce them, we share a landing.

The weird thing is her doors open and shes at work. The bedroom doesnt smell of weed at all. Or fags. Could it really be just coming through the bathroom window?

Yes it could. I can't work it out but I can stand outside my back door with it closed and all windows closed and yet smoke smell comes in somewhere to the bathroom above. Must be catching some vent or something, it's very strange.

No - not acceptable! And defo not comparable with wine! One is illegal and effects everyone breathing the air. The other is legal and only effects the drinker.

I am in the same situation. My neighbour (the whole family!) smoke weed everyday - in-fact every hour. The smell is always in my house and now that I am due to give birth I am getting paranoid that this will effect baby. However they are the NICEST people ever and always so helpful so I don't know how to deal with it.

You should check your contract as currently your subletting and some contracts don’t allow that and insist all tenants be oin the contract.

Its been 20 years. As long as the rent is paid shes not bothered if its jusst my name. She knows its two double bedrooms and theres always two people in it.

Thats the thing, she is lovely and her bedroom is immaculate. My immediate neighbour isnt impressed and this afternoon we were admir8ng my flower boxes when the strongest whiff of weed blew into our faces so its not just my flatmate. However, she is adding to it under our noses.
