Facial hair - teen girls

Posting here for traffic Grin have 2 DDs 13 and 14 who are desperate to get rid of the hair on their upper lips. They are mixed race so look like they have a good tan all year round and I am concerned that they are too young to use my Nair hair remover.

Has anyone let their children remove facial hair? I remember having similar problems at their age but was unable to do anything about it and then used bleach cream at uni which would be useless to them as they haven't got fair skin.

Any thoughts? Kind, please. They are forever asking when they can do something about it but I am loathe to let them but at the same time remember what it is like at that age.

Threading? Is that a better option? Or do I just tell them to suck it up til they're a bit older?

I'd recommend threading, it stings but there's no chemicals. Or a facial epilator but that really bloody hurts!!

Nquartz · 31/03/2019 16:45

And please let them do it, a friend wasn't allowed to sort out her horrendous monobrow until she was 16 & it really affected her self confidence

Palominoo · 31/03/2019 16:46

If this is gentle enough to use near eyes then this should should be OK to try on upper lip area

Please listen to them. I had a really dark tache and body hair but my mum isn’t understanding as she doesn’t even need to shave her legs as her hair is so soft and light. I was teased, bullied and it took alotto feel better about myself. As soon as I could I got the bleach (I’m fair skinned so it works for me)I epilate the area twice a week now, it hurts like hell at first but gets better.

RoseAndRose · 31/03/2019 18:02

I really don't think they're too young for depilatories (providing thet patch test first)

Why do you think they are too young?

DrMidgeryMargery · 31/03/2019 18:03

The little wax strips you can get, own brand from boots or the more expensive brands whose name I can’t remember, are very good. It hurts a bit, but it’s over quickly and it lasts a while.

I was a hairy-lipped teen and was bullied for it. I’d have appreciated solutions to it back then, and won’t hesitate to help my DD if it comes to it. I hated it.

I'm a huge fan of the JML Flawless Face. It's a little electric razor but it's really gentle and doesn't leave stubble. I use it between my brows, on my chin and upper lip. It's much kinder than wax or cream and once you get a bit of regrowth you just use it again rather than having to wait for the hair to grow out like you do with wax.

MrsAmaretto · 31/03/2019 19:42

Take them to be professionally waxed or threaded. It’s horrific being teased about facial hair or being self conscious about it.

FartersDay · 31/03/2019 20:03

Look up a sugaring recipe online. Or buy some nads. I had a horrendous reaction to wax at that age. One of the more humiliating times of my life.

FartersDay · 31/03/2019 20:05

Or buy an epilator if they can handle it.

mizu · 31/03/2019 20:20

Thank you all. Much appreciated. Easter hols coming up, may be the time to do it!
I guess I just want them to be happy with who they are - I do remember being self conscious myself though, it's not a nice feeling as a teen.

If you google "honey, sugar, lemon diy sugaring recipe"
You'll fimd some youtube videos and loads of recipes. Do it at the beginning of the holidays in case they have reactions. Fucking shame girls are under such pressure that their normal human faces arent good enough. I do remember feeling so self conscious

thewreckofthehesperus · 31/03/2019 20:26

Seconding the jml flawless face. Very easy and doesn't leave you with noticeable stubble. I was that teen and bleached from around 13.

PunkRockHippy · 31/03/2019 20:32

The epi-stick spring things you get for a few pounds, they’re so easy to use.

RoseAndRose · 31/03/2019 20:36

Do episticks hurt?

They sound good, but I'm wimpily wondering if I dare

Montsti · 31/03/2019 20:47

I would just use the little wax face strips they sell in chemists..do it at night so it has time to calm down...although I’ve never had an issue.

I have been taking my daughter to have her upper lip done since she was 10. She looks so much better, she was of course beautiful before it . But it just opened her face up and she looked fresher. First time she had to get it redone a few weeks later. Now it’s ever few, onto she tells me when she is ready. She too is mixed race/ olive skinned.

hp2 · 31/03/2019 20:54

Oh and it’s Lyon was at the beautician. I think it’s best done by a professional first few times,

Take them to a salon. Not only will it be done properly (and quickly), the odds are that they will see so many women in there for exactly the same, they'll realise it's actually quite normal and won't think they're hairy freaks.

OK, it then puts them in the perfect place to start becoming interested in nails, eyebrows and all the other lovely things you can have done at a salon, so it might end up costing you a bit - but it saves them being teased at school and messing around with depilatories (which can really burn), razors or trying to wax themselves.

wheresmyhairytoe · 31/03/2019 22:11

I third the JML flawless face thing.

I'm very hairy and my top lip has been dreadful as I've aged, a quick going over once a week and I'm smooth.

SamanthaJayne4 · 31/03/2019 23:09

I had a moustache as a young teenager. Dr said you are like a Spanish senorita and refused to help. I started using tweezers and have used them ever since. I have just bought an epilator but haven't braced myself to use it yet. Tweezers are quite effective and IME do a better job than hair removing cream or wax.
