Noise EVERYWHERE!!!

BedraggledBlitz · 31/03/2019 13:09

At my office job the fucking radio is on all day so I can't concentrate.

I come home and my neighbour plays stupid dance music all day a and night. It's not even crazy loud so I cant really ask them to stop it's just the bassline thumps in my house.

Went on an hour long bus ride yesterday. Someone played music on their phone speaker all the way.

Its making me so stressed and RAAAAAAA!

I would walk round the house with headphones on but have DC so need to hear them.

If only I could have a lottery win and move to a detached place in the middle of nowhere Wine

feel your pain. I have similar issues with noise. Currently sitting in bed with my Bose noise cancelling headphones on so I cantt hear my neighbour talking on her balcony.

moomoomummy · 31/03/2019 13:14

YOu know its called Misonphonia? Not that a name helps in any way

MaMisled · 31/03/2019 13:19

I work a few nights each week and sleeping during the day is almost impossible. Birds singing, cars vrooming, neighbours talking, music playing, builders banging, postman fucking whistling, couriers knocking, dogs barking, hedgehogs farting.......I also want to move to the middle of nowhere.

Not necessarily to a detached property, and certainly doesn't need to be in the middle of nowhere.

If you're currently in a heavily populated area, it could make a big difference just to move somewhere slightly less built up, where your neighbour's are more considerate. I know there are no guarantees, but maybe it isn't impossible for you to change your circumstances.

And you absolutely can get your inconsiderate neighbour's thumping racket sorted out, by keeping a diary of how often and how loud their music is, which you can pass to the Council without it being classed as a NDN Dispute. The council take these environmental noise disturbances seriously if you push them to, and they can put pressure on them in law. My Friend did just this, and they ended up vacating, and now she has lovely quiet and considerate NDNs.

I know what you mean

went to the local park for a nice walk yesterday.....people playing music on speakers.

have you suggested people have headphones and own music in office? I spoke up about radio being on at work and a few people agreed with me so we only have it occasionally now when everyone is okay with it. Boss also sorted a Spotify playlist so we don't listen to annoying radio presenters etc.

Celeriacacaca · 31/03/2019 13:24

MaMisled you need Quies earplugs. They're amazing. I have used them since my night shift days. They're the only thing that I've found can help me sleep when it's noisy (and meant I slept through the builders coming into the bedroom to measure up one day - I had said it was ok to do so!). They're in a plastic box and I get mine from our local independent pharmacy as bigger ones don't seem to do them.

MaMisled · 31/03/2019 13:49

Thankyou Celeriacacaca!!! I'm going to search online right now!

BedraggledBlitz · 31/03/2019 16:55

Yes definitely misophonia. I've always had it, such as massive rage over brother eating apple. My mum's chewing gum phase meant I never sat in the same room as her for a couple of years.

I have told my manager that the radio prevents me from doing my best work. I've told him twice. He has made sympathetic noises and done nothing.

Just back from another bus trip when a man was watching a Bollywood film via his phone. Hmm

You can get earplugs which screen out the music but which still enable you to hear speech. I think musicians use them at loud gigs. You'll have to research.

I'm autistic and noise is a torment to me. I work nights so it's quiet in my workplace, but sometimes the staff talk loudly all night and it's difficult.

BedraggledBlitz · 31/03/2019 17:07

Thanks @ineed I did spend £25 on such headphones but they dont block out enough.

I was also using white noise via headphones, but was going home with a headache every day. Really annoyed that I have to adapt for other people's selfishness.

tectonicplates · 31/03/2019 18:17

No, that isn't misophonia. Misophonia is when you can't stand sounds like chewing or fidgeting. Getting annoyed with people for playing music out loud on the bus is normal because people shouldn't be playing it out loud in the first place, because it's anti-social behaviour. The problem has become worse with mobile phones, but even in the 80s there were adverts on the tube saying "keep your personal music personal". Stop medicalising people for getting annoyed with anti-social behaviour.

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 31/03/2019 18:20

If someone at work wants the radio on all the time, THEY should be wearing headphones, not you!

RosaWaiting · 31/03/2019 20:26

ooh I didn't know that about Tube ads

I might email the Mayor's office and ask if we can have those back! Grin

OP I really feel for you - it's not easy to wear earplugs a lot. I have to wear them every night (block of flats). Can't afford middle of nowhere, alas.

AlexaAmbidextra · 31/03/2019 20:32

See, I don’t think this is misophonia. It sounds to me like a normal reaction to unnecessary and constant noise.

MythicalBiologicalFennel · 31/03/2019 20:35

Would love to hear from the people who play music on loudspeakers in the park, watch a film on the bus etc. Because they are everywhere. What goes through your mind when you do it?

Alabasterangel6 · 31/03/2019 20:42

I agree this is not a phobia.

It’s ignorant rude shits who think you want to listen to their noise 24/7. I’m afraid I can get rather heated about this subject.

My peace and quiet doesn’t ruin everyone else’s ears. We have so many ways to hear music these days just stick your sodding headphones in if you want to listen to it in the garden/bus/office/shop. Don’t assault my brain with it!!!!

What makes anyone else think that I want to hear their tripe?

Alabasterangel6 · 31/03/2019 20:52

Also.... earplugs are great BUT sometimes you just need to hear ‘nothing’ noise too. Right now I can hear the clock ticking, the logs creaking on the fire and far away DH moving about and boards creaking. Just peaceful. Not ‘doof doof doof’ music or bass tones or repetition of music. Sometimes in the garden I just want to hear birds and breezes not crappy local radio stations and dogs yapping incessantly.

BedraggledBlitz · 31/03/2019 21:15

It's so arrogant isn't it?

The work situation really gets to me, because it is common knowledge that I can't stand it but nobody gives a shit cos they like it.

"If your stereo annoys other passengers you are contravening the bye-laws".

It's anti-social behaviour, end of, and it's basically victim blaming to accuse other people of having medical conditions to excuse your unacceptable behaviour.

If the neighbours are playing their music so loudly that it's actually making your house thump, that is your neighbour's fault and not yours.

Noise EVERYWHERE!!!
RosaWaiting · 31/03/2019 23:28

I'm sorry others are having a hard time but kind of relieved it's not just me

I was beginning to think that no one else was annoyed by things like music on speakers in the park etc.

there's so many people making the noise, I'm not sure what proportion of us find it annoying
