hi all!

So a Swiss friend of mine has asked me to look over and correct/improve on this. It's for a brochure.

"The Cave Pousaz Vins, located in the hamlet of Verschiez (Ollon, Chablais Vaudois), was founded in January 2017 by Alexandre Pousaz (winemaker, wine merchant with federal certificate and oenologist ESp).

The link between the Pousaz family, the vines and the Chablais goes back to 1314. In 1984, Paul and André (the grandfather and Alexander’s father) stored in the cellar for the first time, a part of their wine harvest at the vineyard. Until then, the wine harvests were delivered to Aigle and Ollon cooperatives.

The vineyard of Verschiez enjoy an exceptional microclimate with Mediterranean characteristics. The vineyards are cultivated by André who works in PER (ecological service required) and according to the Vitiswiss Charter. These working techniques guarantee the respect of the environment with a sustainable development optic"

Problem is I am not even entirely sure what he's trying to say in some of it. "PER (ecological service required)" is a Swiss qualification as is the "federal certificate"

So far this is what I have written up but I know it doesn't sound as fancy and "Wordy" as he's hoping for

I'm really not good with words in the way some people are! But as a native English speaker he is definitely expecting more of me haha can anyone help?

Your version is far better, his is grammatically incorrect on two occasions and wieldy in general. It also comes across as a little pretentious.

Email your version to him. I sat this as an English teacher for 24 years.

Say not sat!

The Cave Pousaz Vins is situated in the hamlet of Verchiez, which is renowned for it's Ollon, Chablis and Vaudois grape varieties. It was founded by the 13th Century winemaker and merchant Alexander Pousaz (put his b. & d. dates in here), and we retain his name as founder.

The first recorded wines made on the site date from 1314, using locally grown the grape harvests that were delivered to Aigle and Ollon cooperatives to create a Chablis. In 1984 Alexander's grandfather and father harvested their first grapes from the vinyards surrounding the cave.

The Virschiez vineyard, enjoys an exceptional microclimate, with Mediterranean characteristics of warm summers and crisp winters. The vines have been tended by Andre, since he first planted them with his father in 1984. This combination of climate and expertise brings the grapes to perfection at harvest. and our centuries long expertise as wine makers ensures the wine is of the highest quality.

unescorted may I ask though where did you get the "cave" from? Also do you not think it important to mention about the cellar?

OP posts:
Unescorted · 31/03/2019 12:45

watch out for the stray " the" in the first line of 2nd para.

You are welcome. It is a more interesting topic than I normally do.

Unescorted · 31/03/2019 12:45

The cellar is the cave

cave = wine cellar

Wentsworth · 31/03/2019 12:51

ahh ok thanks!!

The Cave Pousaz Vins is situated in the hamlet of Verchiez, which is renowned for it's Ollon

Don't put an apostrophe in its, if you use this version.

justilou1 · 31/03/2019 13:22

Leave the apostrophe there. It’s possessive.

PickleFish · 31/03/2019 13:25

No, really don't. It's possessive, but you don't need an apostrophe in a possessive pronoun like its (or his or hers).

An apostrophe in it's is used when it means "it is" (as a contraction).

PastaOfMuppets · 31/03/2019 13:26

No apostrophe in possessive its, only in contractive, as it's an irregular.

MitziK · 31/03/2019 13:51

Take out ', which is'
Correct to 'its Ollon'. I'd probably put 'due to its exceptional microclimate' there, rather than later on, as it feels a bit clunky at the end.
Take out the comma after (death date)
Check the centuries - 13th Century does not mean a year beginning 13, it means a year beginning 12. 14th would be accurate for the dates you've given.

Once you've checked that,

Rewrite '1314, using locally grown the grape harvests that were delivered to Aigle and Ollon cooperatives to create a Chablis. In 1984 Alexander's grandfather and father harvested their first grapes from the vinyards surrounding the cave. ' as

'Pousaz is first recorded as creating a Chablais from grapes grown locally and delivered to the Aigle and Ollon cooperatives in 1314' [check it's a Chablais and not a Chablis]

650 years later, Alexander's Grandfather and father decided to hold back some of their crop and mature/ferment/age [whatever it is they do there] it in the Cave. [correct spelling!] and '. To this day, Alexander's father tends the Virchiez Vineyard [correct spelling!], his expertise ensuring the exceptional standards of our wine(s) [Chablais? Whatever it is they make] are maintained for future generations.

Means that you get a sense of the history stretching back - and forward, as if it's expensive stuff, they'll be wanting people to invest in buying it for the future, too.
