Mother’s Day..pampered or just another day?

Passmethewineandstraw · 30/03/2019 12:18

How does everyone get treated and pampered on Mother’s Day? Is it just another day of relentless tasks or are you spoiled rotten?

My husband has got better over the years aided by the fact that my DD’s are a bit older (8-12) and can have a say.

They have all popped into town on a secret mission after 3 hours of arguments, soaking wet bathroom floors, endless bowls of cereal, outfit changes and I’m sitting here with a cup of tea thinking ironically this will be the most peaceful part of the weekend! 🤣

I will no doubt get some nice flowers and breakfast in bed and DH will cook me a nice meal as he is an excellent cook...

On top of that I have asked for no arguments, a nice relaxing bubble and bath, a prosecco cocktail in the garden and a sparkly clean kitchen to start Monday with but I’m definitely pushing it there!!

How does everyone else spend there day, being wined and dined, expensive gifts or just a more homemade, relaxed day?

I don't celebrate it.

It was nice when the children were small and made a card etc at nursery and infant school but past that I didn't bother.

My mother was the same.

NoWordForFluffy · 30/03/2019 12:23

The DC are keen for me to have breakfast in bed, but I'm not keen on that idea! I think they've been told at school that this is a good idea! Grin

They've both bought a small gift from the PTA shop at school (spending £2) and I think they've made cards too. And that's fine by me.

I'm not really into being pampered. Sitting around isn't really my thing!

Fr3d · 30/03/2019 12:25

Dh brought the heavy awkward lawn mower around so I could mow the lawn, does that count?
It's also our anniversary of when we started going out Hmm

@Fr3d

That made me laugh!

@NoWordForFluffy

I’m the same, I can’t stand the crumbs!! 🤦🏼‍♀️ I might convince them to move the “celebrations” into the garden since it’s been such lovely weather...tying the Prosecco cocktails in I could be pissed by 9am and no use to anyone anyway! 😬🤣

I'm not fussed by Mother's Day, Valentine's Day etc, it's my first one as a single mum and my kids dad has insisted I go to his and they will make me a roast and have got me some gifts. I love how he still puts the effort in for the sake of our kids but I'd prefer just to have a day to myself 🙈

MishMashMosher · 30/03/2019 12:51

I don't do mothers day. The dc make me a card at school which is nice but I'm not really bothered with all this breakfast in bed, flowers and presents obcession.

NoWordForFluffy · 30/03/2019 12:52

I've only got one usable arm at the moment so would create even more mess than usual (it's my non-dominant arm I have available, so eating isn't necessarily a tidy affair Grin ).

I'm liking the cocktails idea mind you. 😂

BlueMerchant · 30/03/2019 12:56

I will get maybe an extra half hour in bed. Cards and gift. Maybe chocs.
I will have to keep reminding my DC (8&9) that it's Mothers Day so no squabbling and fighting!
OH asked if I wanted to go out for lunch but I'd rather stay in and have a 'relaxing' dayHmm

Chocolateisfab · 30/03/2019 12:56

Oldest dc is taking siblings to town shopping soon! An afternoon of peace and a day of spoiling tomorrow!! Thanks to a fab run of card game wins I am owed a foot rub and a shoulder massage tomorrow too!!
Nice to be appreciated!!

CarlGrimesMissingEye · 30/03/2019 12:56

I'll get a lie in, cards coffee and a small
Gift in bed. Then we're out for lunch to a nice pub. It's all good.

BillyAndTheSillies · 30/03/2019 12:57

Probably won't do cards or presents for me this year. DH has come out in an allergic reaction from head to toe so can't take DS to the shops (pre planning springs to mind!).
Tomorrow will be spent having a family breakfast with my mum, dad, brother and DH and DS.
Dinner with IL's. No lie in likely.
My mum asked for a donation to DEC which I have just sorted.

Passmethewineandstraw · 30/03/2019 12:57

I agree to an extent, we don’t go for the expensive meals out or piles of presents and i will still actively discourage as my girls get older however I do think it’s nice for children to have a day where they appreciate everything that is done for them and return the sentiment by making someone feel good!

Plus any day where it’s acceptable to drink bubbles and everyone has cake is acceptable to me.

Hope you ladies have a great day however you spend it.

I’ll get a card (because I bought it) and maybe a cup of tea but that’ll be it.

I’ve never been pampered or spoilt on any day, never mind Mothers Day.

GreatDuckCookery · 30/03/2019 13:01

I do get pampered on Mother’s Day tbf. Flowers and a nice present and taken out for a nice meal. I’ll get a cup of tea and toast in bed too.

I do the same for DH on Father’s Day.

Middlrm · 30/03/2019 13:02

This is my first one! Worked hard to deep clean house strim and mow lawn so only general cleaning this weekend ☺️

! We are visiting both sets of mums with flowers and cards in the day followed by a take away for me and hubby ( baby only 4 months so will have a bottle of milk ) I may even have a small glass of wine.

Have asked for a card to keep in babies memory box 📦

Almost like a normal mother’s day except I get to cuddle my own baby now x x

LettuceP · 30/03/2019 13:03

Dh is working all day (as in 6.30am-8pm) and its ds's 1st birthday so it's all about him tomorrow. Got family round so I'm cooking lunch and doing a little birthday party.

DH works every mothers day anyway and the dc's are small so mothers day is never relaxing or a day where I get pampered. I wake up after dh has gone to work but he leaves me a card and a present, I know he appreciates what I do anyway.

mama1980 · 30/03/2019 13:05

I always get handmade cards and small gifts. Then we go out for the day.
This year my eldest has come home from uni and she is looking suspiciously excited about something. Lots of whispering with my boyfriend and younger children. So I think they might have planned something else this year.

Nousernameforme · 30/03/2019 13:05

There will hopefully be a bit of a lie in some toast with real butter and fancyish jam. Some token gifts and homemade cards.
Then dp will take kids out for a couple of hours so i can crochet in peace.
I can't wait.

Crunchymum · 30/03/2019 13:06

We don't celebrate (nor do we do fathers day)

Kids get me a card, I get my mum a card but there is no fuss or expense or stress.

swampytiggaa · 30/03/2019 13:06

I’m at work 🙂

Passmethewineandstraw · 30/03/2019 13:07

@LettuceP

My DH is in the forces and has missed a lot of Mother’s Day’s. We have 3 girls within 4 and a half years so it’s not always been easy and very much a case “of cracking on” but like your DH mine is still really good at letting me know how appreciative he is of me and I thinks that’s quite important.

TSSDNCOP · 30/03/2019 13:14

I genuinely could care less, and have a nice husband and child so absolutely don’t need a dedicated day of pampering. I buy my own mum a card, gift and dinner at her favourite restaurant but I’d bet money she wouldn’t care if I didn’t. DH does something with his mum, I don’t go as she’s lovely but his mum.

MenuPlant · 30/03/2019 13:21

I'm not very good at remembering these things and not that fussed but I want to be treated well all the time not just on a special day.

Having said that I do think that it's important to remember the sacrifices that women make with having children partly biological partly because of society and how it all gets taken for granted. eg giving birth is much safer in UK than other parts of world but still in context of our generally safe society is a relatively dangerous thing to undertake. Pregnancy not a walk in the park, birth obv and so on.

Not trying to upset anyone who has kids they didn't give birth to themselves but I do think this side of things is very brushed under the carpet and so for women to have a day is a good thing.

My DH is good at remembering things so I always get a load of presents cards from kids etc. It always comes as a surprise even though I know roughly when it's coming IYSWIM!

I don't like breakfast in bed and he knows that :D In general it would be nice if women could have some downtime just anyway though? Women with kids have less downtime than men with kids. Addressing that would be better than having one big showy day.

IMO.

Blackandpurple · 30/03/2019 13:30

When you dont have your mother around its a bitch of a day. It hurts. So we pass on it. DH knows not to buy me anything cos i don't want it. Appreciate me every day and appreciate everything around you, not just when theres a mark up on flowers and stuff. Kids don’t bother neither and im happy about that. We’ll spend the day together some way, with playing football, taking another to work and youngest being dragged with us!
