I always thought it was something everybody could but today I asked the manager of a pub in was in (a youngish man) to show me where we were on the map and he couldn't - said that he used sat nav instead. So perhaps map reading isn't taught, or learnt, any more. Which seems a shame.

Didn't learn at school until I did DofE, and I know it didn't sink in for most of my mates until Gold...

I know many people depend on satnavs now but most of them were always getting lost and depending on other people previously. Since the satnav I haven't had any calls from DP wailing 'Jack? I'm somewhere in Hackney...' Or had to walk to the station to rescue spatially-inept friends. Even my mate with a guide dog can now get to my house thanks to 'take the next left'.

Yes, learnt at School in the late 70’s and Guides.

No. I was never taught and never learned.

Yes. Use them when hiking. Sat nav can let you down, just when you need it.

I’ve got my girl guiding map reading badge but doubt I could these days.... 😬

DS1 age 12 is obsessed with maps, constantly drawing his own and has a huge amount of geographical knowledge. Buys OS maps with his pocket money!
The other 2 (DD age 10 and DS2 age 8) do map reading with scouts.

Yes, I lead several group hikes a week and plan them OS maps.

I prefer actually leading them following the map on my phone though, as then it also shows me real-time where I am on the map to double check. I can lead off a paper map if I have to, but it's much more effort.

The thing that amazes me though, is the people who can't follow a normal street map around town or along the road without the read-out directions. Unless they are told to turn when they get to junctions, a lot of people seem to get lost very quickly.
