Breastfeeding pain - 9 months old

DS is 9 months old - was treated for tongue tie at 3 weeks but also has a high palate. Latch has never been brilliant on my left breast, and sometimes looks a bit lipstick shaped, but we've been fine.
Suddenly at 9 months I've got the most excruciating pain (it's been building for a few days) and my nipple is very lipstick-shaped and hard. I don't think it's thrush (had that before with DS1). He has one tooth and probably more coming soon. I've also noticed an indentation from his upper gum.
Any advice? How can I treat the hardness?
I've been using lansinoh. Tried a nipple shield earlier and the pain magnified x10 and I cried. Advice really needed.

I have similar. Had a lump and pain and 9m and it’s back again now at 10m. Seems to coincide with new teeth and feels like I’m shutting my nipple in a door when he feeds. I get lumps in my nipple and he cuts them with his teeth. I find lecithin helps although I don’t think they’re blockages.

Anyone got any other ideas?

Do you use the multi-mam compresses , they really help. I think when they get new teeth it completely messes their latch.
I was getting the same too indents & I read that we need to make sure their wee chin in tucked in & maybe lift their weight up higher.
It’s definitely hard as they get bigger but can’t yet understand instructions.

I can identify this week with what you are saying cried breast feeding with pain for first time in 2 years - trying to take time to find comfortable position now DC is bigger. The initial pain has settled its more the needle like prick sensations after a feed / sick of taking pain killers hope it all settles for you soon

Sorry to hear you've also been suffering Shellie and Pixie.
I find it so hard to try to adjust his latch at this age, because he knows what he likes and protests if I change it.
Thank you for the recommendation for Multi-mam compresses. Haven't heard of them before but I've just ordered on Amazon and they'll arrive tomorrow.
I'm dreading tonight! He wakes very regularly through the night for feeds lately.

An update in hope that someone might read this and be able to help...
Five days later and I've not breastfed DS on that side since. It's still very painful. The lump is still there with a kind of yellow colour (nice!). Reading kellymom, I think it might be a 'milk bleb' but the skin around it is very taut and sore.
I've gone through the whole box of Mam compresses, I've been doing Epsom salt soaks several times a day since Monday, and I've been pumping that side to try and keep my supply up, but not getting much out.
Not sure what else to do. DS helpfully pinched my nipple earlier and the pain was intense. When will it get better?! I thought not feeding would give it time to heal, but it's not working.

I’m sorry to hear that - in our case I think it was teething related and the pain has now gone along with the swelling.

I have had a bleb. It was white and in the centre of my nipple. I tried picking at it and soaking it (wet heat). I used coconut oil to soothe it and only fed from it a couple of times a day so give it some resting time. Ultimately the baby got it out. It was so sore and then after two or three days the pain just went.

If you can’t get baby to pull it out then can you bear to pump? That might do it.

I’m a bit worried about you saying it’s yellow though. Do you think you might have an infection? Would germolene or similar help? I might give that a go then maybe see a GP.

What my BF advisor did herself (not advice, just experience) was to sterilise a needle and pop it. I couldn’t bring myself to do that but it’s another option.

Brown76 · 04/04/2019 07:26

I did the sterilised needle thing several times. Didn’t have the misshaping and indentations but did have blockages and severe nipple pain after feeds. Also oversupply.

This combination was helpful:
Would give baby a sip of water before feeds, I think the saliva from teething as they started to wean onto solids was irritating my skin, and read this tip on bf page.
Used paracetamol/neurofen and icepack together after feeds when problems were at worst.
Took soy lecithin 1360 mcg 3 x per day - this was amazing
Took a little dried sage (1/3rd of tsp a day) to slightly dry up milk supply, careful it’s powerful stuff, only use if you gave oversupply.
Got support with latch and positioning again and was mindful
of this during feeds.
After feeds rinsed off nipples with a bit of cold water on a cloth and then applied coconut oil.
Took ages to find this combination!

@Bookywook

How is it now?
I had one of these a few weeks ago AGONY!!!!!
Dakota Cory is a great topical lotion , keep in the fridge and apply after feeding.
I soaked it in a saltwater soak, (saltwater in a bottle cap) for five mins, and try and pop it, but make sure you clean it again.
Let it air dry and even put some BM on it.
Keep it really moist with lanolin .
Horrible wee buggers they are, and take your paracetamol and ibuprofen. Flowers
