ANy essential oil experts out there? Is there one that hides the smell of urine?

I posted the other day about my rug. My toddler did a wee on it, and I tried EVERYTHING! Every remedy you can think of. Including getting it professionally cleaned, and I can’t get the smell out. The smell is less offensive after the professional cleaning, but not gone (cleaner warned it might be impossible).

Now wondering if I can disguise it with something.

Any essential oil that will work?

(All I found when I googled it is articles on how to disguise pet urine, along with warnings about how bad essential oils are bad for pets. I have no pets! So that’s irrelevant. Left with no answers.)

Pets at home sell stuff for pet urine and it breaks it down and the odour will go.

PoliticalBiscuit · 29/03/2019 15:50

Baby powder is fairly effective. Turn upside down and liberally cover the base of the rug.

I don't want to upset you but a child's urine really shouldn't smell strong. It should be relatively clear and not smell strongly.

White vinegar (it will smell like a chip shop for a few hours but that will fade), a strong solution of biological washing powder, or enzyme-based treatments from a pet shop. Urine-off cat formula is the strongest.

Mopthefloor · 29/03/2019 16:08

Yep enzyme treatment. It’s amazing stuff, I use it for sweat smells in clothing and it works wonders.

runoutofnamechanges · 29/03/2019 16:09

@Palominoo that's true of fresh urine but in the same way that sweat doesn't smell itself, the smell of BO comes from bacteria breaking it down into other chemicals, once bacteria starts decomposition of the urine, it's going to start smelling.

Gardeningquestion · 29/03/2019 16:14

runoutofnamechanges and palominoo - I believe I’ve made it worse by leaving it too long (didn’t notice at first) and using an entire bottle of pet urine treatment on it. That stuff made it so, so, so much worse - and since looked at Amazon reviews and apparently it often does Sad

So what was a slightly bad smell is now an awful smell! (Though slightly improved by the professional cleaning.)

Now worried to buy any more urine-oust type sprays, and thinking perhaps I can disguise it with something?!

@Gardeningquestion pet urine cleaners work by killing the bacteria and using enzymes to break down the urine but they don't work effectively on dried urine. You need to keep the stain damp until all the urine has been broken down by the cleaner.

Palominoo · 29/03/2019 16:29

I didn't know that! Thank you runoutofnamechanges

I was worried the child might have an infection so I'm glad it's not that.

Gardeningquestion · 29/03/2019 16:34

runoutofnamechanges I didn’t know that either! That’s probably where I went wrong!

Rug Dr do a pet urine shampoo if you dont want to hire or use a cleaner just dissolve some in a bucket/bowl and use a scrubbing brush

kaytee87 · 29/03/2019 16:38

My toddler has peed on my carpet a couple of times and it never smells of anything.
Are you sure you're not imagining the smell? That's a serious question btw, I've imagined smells before.

MrsCat1 · 29/03/2019 16:44

Bicarbonate of soda mixed with ground up cloves. Rub into the offending area, leave for a day or two and then hoover it up. Worked wonders on my rug that was repeatedly peed on by my cat.

cannycat20 · 29/03/2019 16:56

Is the rug washable, maybe on a gentle cycle in the washing machine with some vinegar, a few times? We have a mainly sweet natured and gentle lady cat who sometimes decides to let us know when she's not happy about something by weeing in unexpected places so we've quite often had to run some of our rugs and mats through the washer. Otherwise, agree with the bicarb comment above.

Or if you can hand soak it, one of the strongest essential oils is thyme, although you'll need to make sure you dilute it well, and maybe mix in a bit of lavender and possibly geranium.

Or there's always zoflora....

SauvingnonBlanketyBlanc · 29/03/2019 18:43

Bicarbonate of soda followed by neat zoflora?

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 29/03/2019 19:20

I think you can get Young Living in the U.K. Their Purification blend deals with string odours.

It successfully worked on our vehicle after we collided with a deer on the highway 🤢

Bringbackthestripes · 29/03/2019 19:25

Get some bicarbonate of soda. Sprinkle a few drops of any essential oil you like the smell of into it and shake the tub then tip half the tub on the spot that smells. Leave it overnight and vacuum off in the morning then put the rest of the tub on and leave it overnight again.

mathanxiety · 30/03/2019 00:23

I bought an enzyme spray for cat pee and it worked wonders. The enzymes apparently eat the proteins or whatever organic substance it is in the pee that causes the smell.

My cat had peed on my Doc Martens but they are as good as new now.
