I tend to like historical fiction that would have Keira Knightley playing the central character in the movie Grin

Circe by Madeline Miller if you like Greek mythology!

Have you read philippa gregory's red queen/white queen? The Bearnshaw series if you liked that, and sharon penman's Sunne in Splendour :)

Try some of the following authors:

Barbara Erskine (if you don't mind a bit of supernature in there, and it would be an older Keira, not the young slip of a girl she was for so long)

Judith Merkle Riley

Marion Chesney, or M.C.Beaton as she's now mainly known (Keira Knightley would be perfect for lots of her heroines) - the Regency novels

Though they're a bit dated now, I grew up on Victoria Holt novels and though I like some of her books better than others, Pamela Belle has written some enjoyable historical novels too

There's quite a nice list at www.goodreads.com/shelf/show/historical-fiction - lots of variety on there, some pretty heavy, but some nice light ones as well.

And if you find an author you like, ask your local library service if they subscribe to Who else writes like. (Or the librarians will be able to suggest some authors for you, I'm sure.)

Depending on how historical you like your novels, I have recently read & would recommend The Tattooist of Auschwitz and Between Shades of Gray. Both are set roughly around the time of the Second World War. They are both fascinating to read although very gritty & go into victims' stories in great detail.

I also agree with the suggestion of asking a librarian for recommendations.

The Aftermath is very good (& Kiera knightly is in the film!)

PomBear

Here Be Dragons is a brilliant book

I have visited some of the places in it, including the site of Llewelyn's palace at Aber.

Visiting and touching Joanna's tomb in a tiny church in Beaumaris was a huge thrill and a very emotional moment.

I imagined Llewelyn Fawr and Llewelyn ap Gruffud standing grieving, it was pretty intense!

Have you read When Christ and His Saints Slept? About The Anarchy of 1135-54, it is also truly stunning Smile

I can’t begin to tell you Elizabeth buchan..was a bit slow to get going but I enjoyed it when I did
Wasn’t frothy...it was a story about undercover work in Denmark during the war which I found rather interesting and presented in a rather unexpected way

Dowser · 31/03/2019 10:52

Lynda la plante ..cold shoulder...also really enjoyed.
Nice twists..set against the back drop of New Orleans with a bit of voodoo or hoodoo chucked in for good measure

Dowser · 31/03/2019 10:56

Read quite a few Phillips Gregory’s and really enjoyed them...
Didn’t realise there was a time line
I might start at the beginning and it might fill in my gaps in British history
