I've not written one for years, what do i need to include these days?
I've got so far
*Name and address and phone number

  • personal statement (have explained I've just finished an apprenticeship but the company cannot take me on as no vacancies) should I explain this? *employment and experience
  • education *hobbies and interests *references

is this the correct layout? do I keep to one page?

Thankyou!

You can find templates online for free, it's super helpful and makes it look professional. Smile

Add email
Take out explanation re leaving current job from personal statement.
Remove hobbies unless relevant eg you restore classic cars and are look for work in a garage.

thanks
so should I just say I've recently completed apprenticeship in such and such and leave it at that? won't they want to know why I'm not staying with the company?

So no to hobbies?

how long should the personal statement be ? I've done 60 words

So no to hobbies?
I've read so many conflicting 'expert' views on this (and pretty much everything else to do with CVs, applications, interviews). Some recruiters think it's good icebreaker material so I include a couple of hobbies/interests. (Maybe it's my navel fluff collection and fondness for taxidermy that's standing in the way of my dream jobWink )

Hollowvictory · 28/03/2019 20:56

I never look at the hobby section. It's usually baloney.

Hollowvictory · 28/03/2019 20:56

I've recruited thousand of people

Id leave out the personal statement.

Leave that to the cover letter.

Stick to the facts. Your details and experience.

EssentialHummus · 28/03/2019 21:07

CV writer here. I'd omit the stated detail from the personal statement - you can explain this more appropriately in a cover letter. ("Having completed my apprenticeship at XY Widgets in March 2019, I am now looking for a role that will allow me to build on the skills gained.")

Length: Up to two pages is standard. One page is fine if you have very little experience. Don't bulk it up.

Try to tailor your work experience in a way that maximises its relevance to the role you're applying for (i.e. if you're applying for a role that requests good numeracy and strong Excel skills, mention that you have used these skills in a previous role if you have done so).

Hobbies - either omitting or including is fine. "In my spare time I enjoy fell walking and baking" is about the level of detail you need for most hobbies unless the circumstances are unusual.

And yy to including an email address.

Thank you all, I've completed and emailed to some employers. I didn't include hobbies in the end and kept it to1 page.
Fingers crossed everyoneSmile
