Which is the Best Newspaper in the UK?

I'm politically Centrist so find The Telegraph and even Times sometimes to be a bit too tory. Equally, the Guardian can be too leftie for me.

Obviously one can read things with a pinch of salt!
Daily Mail just seems a bit provoking, often unsubstantiated.
Sun just gossip and no real news.

I like the Economist but it can be terribly dry, the same as the Financial Times.

Which is the Best Newspaper in your opinion and why?

The Guardian is an embarrassment. I'd sooner read the Mail. It's millennial, student vegan wokeness is beyond parody. It used to be a proper campaigning newspaper but now it makes me cringe.

I read the Times for proper journalism. I'm left of centre too but I expect more of a newspaper than the Guardian can offer right now.

onemouseplace · 28/03/2019 14:39

I'm left of centre but cannot get on with the Guardian. I buy The Times. I find the general quality of the writing and journalism top notch even if I don't always agree.

Same here.

The Metro because it's free. It's not great though but I vote with my purse.

The Telegraph - it can be a bit right leaning but the lifestyle pages are great and are beginning to feature younger readers.
Plus, they have an entire Women's Sport team (they're the only ones who do).

BlackPrism · 28/03/2019 14:42

Younger writers* not readers ffs

longwayoff · 28/03/2019 22:07

The Telegraph, mouthpiece of the Barclay Brothers, 'a bit right leaning'? GrinGrinGrin

Burpsandfustles · 28/03/2019 22:50

What gingham box said Grin

I like times as well. Metro, standard, mail and range of others.

Nnnnnineteen · 28/03/2019 22:56

Guardian for the cooking bits, mail for the puzzles on a Sunday. None for actual news, I tend to flick through the BBC news for highlights and then research as I see fit.

Ribbonsonabox · 28/03/2019 23:02

The Guardian is my go to even though I dont agree with some of the opinion pieces. I dont think it is 'leftie' actually... it's more centrist usually.
But when it comes to news coverage rather than opinion pieces I find it to be less ott than other papers... it's the least permanently horrified/offended.

I treat the Daily Mail like Take a Break magazine. Its 90% bollocks but can sometimes be very amusing.

Jsmith99 · 28/03/2019 23:15

It’s close between the Guardian and the Times. The Guardian’s political coverage is excellent, particularly the live blog. Some of their commentators are good, but others are just awful.

The Times has very good columnists and sports coverage. A very strong all-round paper.

The Mail’s sports coverage is good, but everything else is crap.

The Sun & Star are not newspapers.

SpoonBlender · 28/03/2019 23:23

The I and the FT for news coverage without eyeroll-inducing political swerve. Observer on the weekends, it's lefty but not twatty about it.

Actually I've largely given up on them and read Private Eye and The Week instead.

ErrolTheDragon · 28/03/2019 23:47

The Times. We have a subscription to it, but read various other free online papers too.

PBobs · 29/03/2019 04:47

The FT and online news agencies like Reuters. Reuters is my favourite.

RedRiverShore · 29/03/2019 05:13

No-one on here will read the Daily Mail but funnily enough can always link to articles or moan about stuff in it. I read all the newspapers for different bits of news and articles but not the whole of the paper just bits.

MaidenMotherCrone · 29/03/2019 05:26

The best British newspaper is the one wrapped around your chips. Second is the one you put down for a puppy to piddle on and the third is the one you twist into coils to lay a fire on.

The rest are a waste of trees, money and the paperboy's time.

MyOtherProfile · 29/03/2019 05:33

The i is great. Bitesized chunks, clearly set out, good content and great puzzles.

alwayscrashinginthesamecar1 · 29/03/2019 06:08

This is one of the only things I miss about the UK, apart from M&S food hall and old pubs. I live in Western Australia, and all the papers are just awful! When friends visit the UK I get them to bring me back a Saturday Guardian and a Sunday Times, and go to the pub and read them with a pint, utter bliss! I wish I could get on with reading the papers on line, but it just isn't the same.

QueenOfTheAndals · 29/03/2019 08:01

The West Australian is the worst isn't it @alwayscrashinginthesamecar1? Such a ridiculous headlines about non-stories like teenage girls getting drunk etc.

Mother87 · 29/03/2019 08:08

The Telegraph... yes a bit right-leaning but i'm happy with most of it/the writers/the quick crosswordGrinthe weekend sections/the style of the obituatriesBlush

For magazines, used to read the economist (only when i have aaaacres of time like travelling/waiting for hosp appts/holidays and was only interested in some articles and sections) - but tried the new statesman and loved it

Mother87 · 29/03/2019 08:11

Agree with what Ribbonsonabox said about the Daily Fail - fun/like a comic/amusing... would read covertly if nothing else available. Wouldn't touch a tabloid/red top

Littlebelina · 29/03/2019 08:20

I prefer the Times, sometimes the observer. Will pick up most of them to read them if they are lying about but those are the only 2 I'd pay money for. I'd say I'm a bit of left of centre but like the writing and features in the Times. I think what you have to remember is that all newspapers will have a bias one way or another, the important thing is to know it and judge their articles with that in mind

longwayoff · 29/03/2019 09:13

By the way, imo Guardian for best crosswords

gastropod · 29/03/2019 11:49

Thanks for posting this as I've been wondering the same.
Used to like the Guardian but now it's all opinion and comment and very little decent reporting.
I read Politico (online) for their good EU and political coverage.
Used to read the Independent but their awful new website makes my browser crash (even with an ad blocker).
I won't read the Mail or click on a Daily Mail link ever again due to their hateful and bigoted reporting pre and post Brexit referendum.

Oly4 · 29/03/2019 11:54

Guardian and the Times.

eddiemairswife · 29/03/2019 11:59

Been reading the Guardian since 1962. On-line during the week, but the real thing on Saturday. I enjoy attempting(and sometimes completing) the cryptic crossword. Look at Mail-on-line each day for a laugh.
