I'm convinced my phone listens to me

Have absolutely no interest in marriage. Never watch any shows, google anything to do with it. Nothing.

Yesterday my friend knelt down to help me up off the floor and I said jokingly 'omg. Are you asking me to marry you!' we made a few more wedding jokes.

Last night I got 2 adverts for 'wedding gowns' and one for a local wedding venue. I've just now got an email from Pinterest helping me pick out the perfect engagement ring 😒

That's some coincidence?

I have had it tell me how long it would take me to get to DD2's place one time and that was even freakier, as I don't go that often or on a regular day. I don't understand technology.

Right I have now turned off:

Siri (everything to do with Siri)
Dictation (under General, Keyboards)
Microphone (any apps that had access now don’t)

Anything else I need to turn off? They don’t make it obvious do they??

luckiestgirl · 28/03/2019 11:16

How did you guys not know this? I really thought this was common knowledge. I like it.

Blobby10 · 28/03/2019 11:20

Its worth going into each app and checking the microphone is turned off there too. And turn Siri off as well.

It definetly does. My daughter was telling me that my grandson was discussing visiting a certain restaurant when they go abroad. Next he gets a discount for that restaurant. He has to,d me about this sort of thing before so when he was with me I decided to try it out. I talked about how much I would like a green dress. Lo and behold a short time after a photo of a green dress appeared as an offer in an advert. IBigBrother is definetly here. Also my daughter had a weird experience with Alexa when it was turned off when they discussed a possible holiday. Apparently Alexa woke up and offered flight bargains.

Yes, your phone listens to you. I'm always surprised that people don't know this.

CigarsofthePharoahs · 28/03/2019 15:53

I thought this was a well known thing now.
It's tempting to "borrow" someone's phone and whisper a variety of strange words into it to see what happens.

nannybeach · 28/03/2019 16:37

Articles about it in papers and on TV, yes, its listening, as well as your smart TV, (you can disable this function) new fridge/freezers,smart meters, baby monitors, big brother is watching and listening!

velourvoyageur · 28/03/2019 17:11

Was in a hotel the other week and for a few days in a row I briefly watched some breakfast programme on the TV which I normally never watch, was logged in to the hotel wifi but would have thought that was irrelevant.
When I got home on my own wifi, my youtube start page was full of recommendations for clips for that show inc. the segment I'd seen that morning, so odd!! (or well, creepy)
So my phone (shitty 3 y.o. iphone) was somehow listening to the TV, managed to work out it was that show and then because I was logged in to YT it then spread to my laptop?

I tried this once but it didn’t work. I started talking about incontience aids, but didn’t get any ads. Most disappointed ☹️

I’ve known that for a few years, I was talking to my mum about going to visit my dad, a few hours later when I turned on Facebook an advert for restaurants in that town came up, another time I was talking about an American university with a friend logged on to Facebook to show him something unrelated and next thing an advert about that very universitiy. My life is not remotely interesting so if they wanna waste thier time listening to my boring conversations about tv and sports, entirely up to them 😊

Google on my phone has a habit of launching whenever I say hello to my cat. I feel a bit sorry for it, it's like it wants me to call it sweetiepops and tell it how much I missed it.
