Quick help please. Credit card balance transfer

I've had a message to offer a zero percent charge on balance transfer of credit card debt. I have debt of less than £3000 but only income in my name is child tax credit, dla and child benefit. I don't want to apply to transfer if it's going to make things worse but I can pay off most of the debt during the zero rated time if they allow it. Need advice. Don't want to apply if it will make things worse

How do you think it will make things worse? You do know that there is charge for the balance transfer?

Fanjango · 28/03/2019 22:42

Just seen this. No there's no charge for balance transfer according to email. But I only get tax credits and am not currently in work so am concerned they will a) say no and b) by putting in a request alert current credit company that I have no real income.

I get more than the 7,500 per annum in tax credits but they state income...would that count?

Don't trust any emails. Spammers can go fuck themselves.
Go to moneysavingexpert or some similar site and check the reviewed cards - they'll show you which really have zero fees/penalties.

This is from my bank. I want to move my card balance from old card to them. It's a genuine offer

I wouldn't trust an email.

I'd go on my banks website and see what they offer...

You might be able to get better deals elsewhere as well

Fanjango · 28/03/2019 23:36

I've double checked. The deal is correct in their website.

Go to Moneysavingexpert they have a free calculator that you put all your income and outgoings into to see if you qualify for any credit and it doesn't affect your credit rating. Never reply to an email. Even if you think it comes from your bank.

If it's from your own bank, they already know how you run your current account, what income you have and where it comes from, so might not even do a full credit check.

If you are paying credit card interest elsewhere, it's likely that you will be better off transferring the balance to this offer even if there is a fee involved. Fees are usually 2-3% but this gets you time to pay the balance off interest free, instead of paying interest on the debt that you are currently paying.

Just make sure you cut your old card up and do your upmost to pay the balance off in full during the interest free period.

Not sure why people are so skeptical about this offer. I have several current accounts and just about all of them offer me a credit card balance transfer every time I log in and if I hadn't opted out of marketing emails, I would probably get the offers by email too. Credit cards are literally throwing offers at people right now.

Thanks @BarbaraofSevillle it says there's no fee for balance transfer for the first so many weeks so as I only have one to transfer it won't cost anything it seems. Will save me a fortune in interest so I can reduce the balance.
