Posted before that I was very lucky to come into a small and very unexpected windfall, it's a lot of money to me but not to everyone and not enough to take me over any thresholds affecting my benefits.

Further to my earlier thread, following advice in real life cheque now banked.

I think getting the right equipment with a view to working at home to make a small investment work for me, would be the best option right now.

The money I could make from doing this could be used to fund the other things I'd like to do on the back of this small windfall.

As per thread title I would most like to hear from people who are working in online admin/publishing/online tutoring inc tefl type roles.

I have a lot experience of admin roles in a variety of fields inc medical, legal and technical areas, I have qualifications that mean I could extend into publishing/online tutoring roles, perhaps if it's possible/necessary to gain additional relevant qualifications online this could be something worth doing?

More than happy to discuss by pm if people prefer.

My main concerns are around not wasting time/money on useless qualifications or unnecessarily fancy/expensive equipment.

I'm not an IT savvy person in terms of hardware/buying equipment at all (but very quick learner at using software and I've maintained my knowledge and speed on the usual basic msoffice type packages, and I'm confident I could learn others quickly and efficiently I've always had a knack)

Perhaps pie in the sky but I'm thinking of doing things like proof reading, editing, copywriting (at which point done smart arse will no doubt point out a spag error on this post 😂) or transcription.

But I really feel I need guidance from those already doing this work or who employ people who do.

For admin try Sensee or Enterprise Rent A Car.

Call centre/customer service/complaint type work is not suitable I don't have the experience or aptitude for it

Hi, there are now lots of companies out there offering work online, though some are better than others so I'd definitely suggest having a look at Trustpilot and other review sites to get an idea.

I do some work through a couple of the main freelance sites - mainly writing and some virtual assistant support with a tiny bit of translation into English (first degree was modern languages), and occasional audio transcription, although I find that very hard work. I do have good headphones and a foot pedal, bought as a "return" from Amazon but in very good condition; I did also buy some transcription software but that seems to have a mind of its own, it's a bit clunky. And while I did try out speech recognition software (Dragon) that's only designed really for one voice at a time so doesn't work well to transcribe group files, which is a lot of what I get asked to do.

I also do a little bit of work on my own, again, writing and that kind of thing, and since I trained to be a teacher, though many years ago now, I'm also thinking of doing the online tutoring thing, so I keep an eye out for jobs that are advertised. I've seen tutoring jobs advertised on indeed; I've seen them advertised on LinkedIn. If you're happy to send me a PM (is that how it works on mumsnet? I've never been sure) I can send you a list of the links I have so far to get you started, if you like, but even a quick search on indeed for online tutor brings up these vacancies, today alone: www.indeed.co.uk/jobs?q=online+tutor&l=London&sort=date

And then I occasionally see adverts for related work, putting online courses together and that kind of thing.

With regards to the proof reading, I think the market leader is widely thought to be SFEP (Society for Editors and Proofreaders) - they have a wide range of courses and though they're not cheap, you can do them bit by bit, and they're almost all available online. The link is www.sfep.org.uk. With a first degree in languages, proof reading is also something I've thought about, I just want to get the piece of paper for my own peace of mind really, and so I can say I'm registered.

There's also the society of indexers who are kind of similar but, you guessed it, for indexers - www.indexers.org.uk - might be especially suitable given that you've got the medical and legal background.

And if you do buy any equipment to help you set up make sure you check out whether you can declare it against tax or your benefits if you've declared you're doing any self employed work - if you have a work coach they should be able to help you with this.

All the best.

I'm hoping (perhaps unrealistically) that I can find relatively steady employment of this type.

Think I need to get advice on that as my aim is not to mess up my currently reliable income unless it's to replace it with an equally reliable income (hope that makes sense)

Hadn't even thought about needing to declare the equipment against tax etc.

Cannycat20 I'm pm'ing you thanks
