Kings Cross to Denmark Hill, then nice lunch, then back to KX?

I have to do a long trip from Scotland on Sat.
I'm visiting a friend who is in the Maudsley.
I'm coming by sleeper and am disabled and am worried about the physical requirements. I do have another friend who will meet me in town but they won't chum me to the hospital.

Can i get from KX to Denmark Hill easily?
Is there anywhere nice (ish) to go for Lunch after (i know, only the whole of London I guess but under £50 and involving no trekking so easy to get back to KX so off Northern line?)

I don't get out much, as you can prob tell...

Not got any helpful suggestions but what a kind friend you are coming all that way. Obviously your friend is very poorly and I wish him/ her well but I’m sure they will appreciate the effort you’ve gone to and hopefully it will lift their spirits. Safe travels and I hope someone is along with something more helpful!

Hmm, I think the easiest way would be to cross over to St. Pancras and get the train maybe? The Thameslink line runs through that neck of the woods to Loughborough Junction and Herne Hill which are both nearby, and then a bus a few stops down the road. If not, I guess northern line to elephant and castle and then the bus? I think the train is often better accessibility wise if that's a concern.

HopelesslydevotedtoGu · 27/03/2019 15:32

You could take Victoria line kings cross to Highbury Islington (not step free) and then overground train to Denmark hill (step free, take clapham bound train). Denmark hill station v close to maudsley.

In the maudsley grounds there is a cafe called Ortus open to staff, patients, public which is nice if your friend doesn't mind staying on site. It is only open weekdays and has level access, disabled loo, a few outside tables. Busy at lunch time but otherwise fairly quiet and I'm sure you could linger.

Ladsladslads · 27/03/2019 15:34

I stand corrected! You can get a train from St. Pancras straight into Denmark Hill. It's the one that goes to Orpington. Very easy! There are currently problems with the lifts at Denmark Hill though, according to national rail

hoorayforharoldlloyd · 27/03/2019 15:37

St Pancras goes to Denmark hill directly - you can then walk to cafes before camberwell Green or get 176, 185 or 40 from outside denmark Hill and go to east dulwich, lordship Lane. Nice pub food - lordship, bishop, East Dulwich tavern, or Turkish, Japanese, Thai, French. Also posh cafes - brick house, kanela, luca. Hope your meet up goes well

TooTightJeans · 27/03/2019 15:39

The 45 bus goes from Kings X to Camberwell Green which is a 5 min walk to the Maudsley. That’s if you have time to take the bus.

OrchidInTheSun · 27/03/2019 15:41

There's s pun that does nice food right in the train station at Denmark hill. Otherwise get the bus down the hill to Herne Hill. Much nicer than camberwell. There's Parks Edge, the Florence, Lido cafe, cafe Provençal ...

OrchidInTheSun · 27/03/2019 15:41

A pub! And get the one verground to Denmark hill. Bus will take hours

HopelesslydevotedtoGu · 27/03/2019 15:41

Oh sorry I see you said Saturday

StripeyChina · 27/03/2019 16:04

THANK YOU lovely people - am feeling less overhwelmed now.

I think the train from St Pancras sounds best.
Will do visit at hosp.

Friend (who i thought would chum me but wont) wants to meet around Waterloo / 'in the middle' (of Waterloo and Kings Cross?)

Posh Cafe great but I care more about reducing Tube changes than anything i think?

I cant really do buses easily. I wonder if I said 'meet back at KX then' if they'd go for that and if there is anywhere nice / open /green near there to eat?

You can only get from Denmark Hill to Waterloo by bus. Trains from Denmark Hill go into Blackfriars (where you change to get to St Pancras, you almost certainly can’t get a direct train on a Saturday, btw), Victoria and the Overground goes to either Clapham Junction or east to Shoreditch.

Loopytiles · 27/03/2019 16:30

Kings Cross to St Pancras isn’t far and both have lifts.

Check lifts at Denmark Hill are working as there are a LOT of steps if not. Loughborough Junction is another option.

Waterloo not really “in middle” if you’re travelling by train from Denmark Hill or Loughborough Junction.

FranklinTheCat · 27/03/2019 16:34

For lunch, there are lots of options around King's Cross, and in both stations.

My favourite, for something "nice", is the German Gymnasium, which is right behind King's Cross and has different bits within it (restaurant/bar, etc).

For somewhere with outside space, have a look at Granary Square - it's a five minute walk behind King's Cross. There are two places there, names escape me, but they have outside seating around a square. Service has been very variable when I've been there, just to warn you.

I haven't been but am dying to try Dishoom and there is a branch next to Granary Square....

There is also Camino for tapas. Again, about five minutes walk from King's Cross.

Hope that helps for ideas!

Loopytiles · 27/03/2019 16:36

Agree, Kings Cross best.

Given that you’re travelling such a long way, visiting an unwell friend and are disabled, the friend you’re meeting for lunch should travel to Kings Cross IMO!

StripeyChina · 27/03/2019 16:49

OK so it looks like train from KX to Maudsley and back (poss via Blackfriars as its a Saturday)

I am thinking there might be some nice cafes round KX but not a park?

Other thing i'd like to do is stand outside HoParliament to 'take in the atmosphere' but not sure the best way to get there either (hopeless!)

There are lots of places to eat at KX especially around granary sq. if it’s nice weather another option is to get supplies from Waitrose or M&S and have a picnic in granary sq by the fountains where there are lots of cafe style tables for public use.

If you want to go to the Houses of Parliament you’ll need to change trains etc so I think that might be tricky given what you’ve said.

For restaurants near Kings X Dishoom is amazing, but expect to queue.

StripeyChina · 27/03/2019 16:55

KX does sound like a good bet then

I might say to lunch friend, either come meet me at Maudsley and we'll make our way to Westminster (he can help me) and after I'll get on Northern line to KX, or I'll just head straight to KX and he can come across from Waterloo (he is able bodied and only an hour away)

Thank you for helping me think it through everyone. x

You can get the number 12 bus from Camberwell to Westminster, or you can take the Overground to Canada Water and change on to the Jubilee line to Westminster tube, there are lifers at Canada Water and probably Westminster.

Broken11Girl · 27/03/2019 17:09

Love Walk cafe. Turn right from the Maudsley, 1 min walk, cute cafe that does great food. Plenty more coffee shops and cafes if you continue down Denmark Hill too. It's always buzzing with students and staff from Maudsley and KCH, and local young hipsters. As you have health issues making it difficult to get around I would just ask your other friend to meet you there.
Houses of Parliament are easy to get to and not too far by bus (train/ tube, not really) - could you do it if your friend goes with you?

DianaT1969 · 27/03/2019 18:00

Try to get to Denmark Hill station, because I don't think Loughborough Junction has a lift. Loughborough Junction is a commuter station, so not likely to be well-staffed on a Saturday either. I would push your friend to meet you at KX. Getting to Waterloo/Parliament would take a lot of your valuable time. There is a posh hotel at At Pancras that might have a nice brasserie. Quite a few pubs at KingsX and at At Pancras too.

Orchidflower1 · 27/03/2019 19:59

The British library / museum is nice for a mooch around if you’ve got time so my mil says.

Meretricious · 27/03/2019 20:03

Second the British library. There’s a lovely courtyard if it’s nice with a cafe, it’s paninins and stuff but nice. And it’s v v close to KK.

Dishoom at granary yard is lovely if it’s rsining.

Andcake · 27/03/2019 20:10

I would meet near Blackfriars south side....friend can walk from Waterloo (15 mins or so) you get a lovely river view of London - St. Paul's etc and lots of trains from kx to Blackfriars.

Restaurants nearby as is the Tate modern.... Much easier and quicker than bus. More London sight seeing than kx and also on the route to Denmark hill if needed.

Enjoy

StripeyChina · 28/03/2019 06:55

I'm SUCH an idiot!
