Protein drinks/weight loss

Sonny23 · 27/03/2019 11:24

Posting here for traffic.

feeling very clueless about everything atm.

I need to loose a bit of weight and tone up a lot (previous fast weight loss leaving a little loose skin aswell as having 3 children close together)

I have started going to the gym 2x per week, will be going 4x from May when dd does more days at nursery.

I am trying to eat a low calorie diet to shed the weight.

I've read a lot about the diet fuel protein drinks, is this something I should be looking at adding to my diet? Does anybody use this type of thing?

Just feeling fed up and frumpy Sad

I wouldn’t worry about feeling clueless. It’s an information minefield out there when it comes to weight loss!

I’m a personal trainer. I have come on threads before pointing people in the direction of James Smith PT on social media. He does a good (albeit sweary) job of cutting through the bullshit.

He talks about how weight loss is purely (for the majority of people) a case of calories in vs calories out. People put far too much emphasis on exercise for weight loss, but in reality diet is far more important. You need to create a small calorie deficit. Eating more protein will help you feel fuller for longer so it helps to try and increase your protein intake. I personally rather get protein from food rather than shakes, but if shakes help you hit your protein target for the day and help you stick to a calorie deficit then go for it. Do what works best for you :)

Whatever you do dont get sucked into buying those weightloss drinks Boombod.

I went to visit someone I used to work with and she had bought several packs of these powders but had a bad stomach from them she complained and wanted a refund but didn't get anywhere.

Like a fool I said I'd give one a go as a test.

Omg that evening I was doubled up with griping pains, same as her.

It went after a couple of hours but my goodness it was horrible. Tasted vile too.

for increased protein in my diet i simply eat meat...ham to be precise relatively low calorie with loads of protein.
a small piece of ham with an egg for breakfast, a piece of ham added into baked beans, ham in a sandwich.
i just find it a bit more versatile than chicken.

Sonny23 · 27/03/2019 18:26

I fell for the boombod thing already Blush it gave me lots of problems!

I'm trying to up my protein a bit, I do struggle with with meat but am trying to eat more of it. I have been eating a lot of egg at the moment.

I get stuck between trying to up my protein and restricting calories Confused

I've just started choir madeleys body blitz which is high protein. I follow that and also use my fitness pal to track the macros (fat/carbs/protein)... definitely recommend it!

James Smith is the bomb. I'm a week into Academy membership and I've honestly never found anything that makes as much sense.
I know a fair bit about diet, nutrition and I also have a few exercise qualifications. But somehow he seems to crystallise all that into something understandable, methodical and reliable.
And the recipes on the website are amazing.

Needallthesleep · 27/03/2019 18:51

So happy I’ve found my fellow James Smith fans! He is really good. I also love Matthew Carter for calling out the absolute nonsense that is Boombod. I actively will not shop anywhere that stocks it, it’s an appalling product marketed at young girls by influencers that edit their photos.

LadyMarmyLard · 27/03/2019 19:17

I buy the bulk powders protein from amazon, it is good to mix with porridge or plain yoghurt if you don't eat enough meat. (And it acts a sweetener)
Avoid the shop bought protein drinks as they are FULL of sugar which will turn to fat so it's counterproductive for weight loss.

I also use 'my fitness pal' to track calories and macros, it has taught me a lot about how much I need to eat!

Now following James Smith PT- thanks for the recommendations, never heard of him before Blush

Sonny23 · 27/03/2019 19:25

What is the academy membership confused?

Lady, I only found him a couple of hours ago and I love him already!

I use my fitness pal but always forget to log stuff. It works out I should be eating a lot of calories too which makes me a bit Confused seems like an awful lot to me. I never hit them and don't seem to be loosing weight, intact have put it on as I've been struggling to do up all my jeans Blush

@Sonny23 it's a monthly subscription, provides access to a huge range of recipes and weights exercises, you get a personalised training plan and a coach to talk to when needed. That is £40 but there's a basic plan which costs around £8 I think but I'm not sure exactly what you get.

James himself says that his goal is for people to join for 3 months, then be confident enough to manage on their own.
