My autistic non verbal 2 year old developed a rash earlier . I bathed him and a few spots came up. They kinda look chicken pox ish.
Ive dealt with pox before with my elder 2. But how the hell do you calm a screaming child who is throwing himself all over the sofa trying to itch his own skin off while screaming! His verbal skills are basically none existent. He has a developmental age of a year younger. So basically he cant tell me what's wrong, where it itches and cant understand me trying to sooth him.
Any tips would be grateful. Pretty sure its gonna be a rougher ride than it was with the other two Sad

i would put scratch sleeves on him to start, just so he can't continuously scratch, and get more upset when the scratching begins to hurt. then, i would start distracting: tv, ipad etc. i would also give an oatmeal bath 2 times a day to help the itching: just put finely ground oatmeal into bath water. good luck!

He wont even tolerate socks on his feet so not sure how well scratch sleeves would go down. Would gluten free oats work do you think? One of his many allergies/intolerances is gluten Sad he reacts to oat milk so can only assume oat bath would be similar. I get a feeling this is going to be a rough few days.

Bicarbonate of soda in bathwater helped my son. It stops the itching.

Oh gosh.

Um...would he tolerate having virasoothe gel applied to his skin?

It does help and is better than calamine imo and is invisible so be able to "see" it like the white crust of calamine lotion.

Can he take meds? A liquid anti histamine like piriton?

I was going to suggest the oat bath...I guess if you have gluten free oats he won't react??

Sorry, how difficult for you

Chocolateisfab · 26/03/2019 19:13

Give him a cotton bud and let him help paint calamine lotion on himself.

Phillipa12 · 26/03/2019 19:15

Vira soothe. My ds2 has just had chicken pox and this was recommended. Its a clear gel and you apply all over the body, 1 large blob can be rubbed in in a matter of seconds and it is cooling.

Imacliche · 26/03/2019 19:16

Bicarb is a fab idea. As is gluten free oats. He does love his baths so i can see him spending a lot of time in it over the next few days. Have given him antihistamines ( we have plenty in stock due to his multiple allergies)
Hes also prone to pneumonia which can be a complication from chicken pox.
This is going to be a rough ride.
Will have a look at virasoothe as he freaks out if he gets anything visible on his skin so a clear gel would likely work. Thanks for the tips

imacliche don't apologise, chickenpox are awful Sad might this help? it is meant to sooth the itch of chicken pox. also, sugar free ice lollies like these take some time to eat (distraction) and if there are any chickenpox in his mouth, help sooth those.

i dont know if it would be worth persisting with the scratch sleeve at night (or perhaps popping it on one he is asleep) purely because you don't want him scratching in his sleep. you could leave them off in the day. but obviously i dont know your child so if you think he couldn't tolerate them then thats obviously your decision Smile

Imacliche · 26/03/2019 19:29

Oh im well and truly gonna give everything a shot. The sleeves are a fab idea as less likely to pull them off. When hes poorly he usually camps out on the sofa with me as he wont leave my side when hes ill. Hes just dropped off after 2 doses of antihistamines so hoping he gets at least a couple of hours sleep.
Im.just going to spend the night shopping for chicken pox intervention supplies. This may or may not include gin for me for the weekend and some easter eggs (purely for keeping my energy up naturally Grin)
