What after school/weekend activities does you 6 yr old dd do that aren't gymnastics or dance?

Just wondered....dd does rugby but the season ends soon.
She's never really taken to gym or dance. And she doesn't like football. Or tennis.

She already goes swimming after school but looking for a weekend activity that dp can take her to as a sub for their usual 'bonding over rugby' sessions....

park run

Fazackerley · 26/03/2019 12:04

my dds have always done park run when the footie or hockey season ends. Means they go back to the new season really fit!

SalrycLuxx · 26/03/2019 12:06

Swimming
Martial arts
Hockey
The odd 5k.

We have a junior park run nearby thats only 2k
If they go with a few little friends its really fun for them

rholo · 26/03/2019 12:09

Karate, climbing and swimming. She's eight now but has done some combination of the above since she was five.

blackteaplease · 26/03/2019 12:10

We also do junior park run and swimming.

ChicCroissant · 26/03/2019 12:10

Drama!

Do you have a trampoline park near you, because that's usually a winner?

Keener · 26/03/2019 12:12

Martial arts, yoga, Beavers.

Drogosnextwife · 26/03/2019 12:13

Horse riding, my ds 5 loves it. He doesn't go to classes just a pony treck every few weekends because we can't commit to it every week.

DonPablo · 26/03/2019 12:13

Mine does hockey and its been great. Really friendly, he's learned lots, mixed teams, lots of tournaments and his dad thinks it's brilliant and has even been roped into the parents v players match!

Hopefullysmart · 26/03/2019 12:14

Netball and brownies/guides.

Fazackerley · 26/03/2019 12:15

our hockey clubs finish same time as rugby in april

superking · 26/03/2019 12:17

Cricket? Have a look at All Stars cricket, run by the ECB. DD went last summer and loved it. It's mixed and I would say about 1/4 of the participants were girls.

Mmmhmmokdear · 26/03/2019 12:18

Cheerleading. Although might be too similar to dance / gymnastics. She loves Brownies, although girls can be Cubs / Scouts now too. She also did Stagecoach for a while - performing arts.

dameofdilemma · 26/03/2019 12:18

Thanks all.

The local weekend park run is 9am which is way too early for all of us. Its a shame as both dp and I like running but we spend all week getting out of the house early for work/breakfast club at school and weekend mornings are dd's time to play in her PJs...

I love climbing but sadly dd didn't like it. Will try her again on it.

Don't think there's anywhere in our vicinity that does hockey for her age (other than at private schools for their pupils) but martial arts is a possibility. Will look into that.

Looking for something inclusive where ethos is about enjoying learning something new, not having to be the best and not all about competitions. Its just for fun, I'm not training her for county level or anything. For those whose kids do martial arts, is it intense or fun?

Chic - dd already does a musical drama club, she loves it but looking for something more active.

Ds (5 nearly six) does story club and art club after school and has swimming lessons on a Saturday morning.

I used to do horseriding, swimming, dance and drama. Swimming and horse riding were my favourite. Loathed dance (not the actual dancing, but the whole culture surrounding it. It only seems to have got worse in the 15 years since I stopped too. I did it for 10 years)

bestbefore · 26/03/2019 12:29

how about cricket? The English Cricket Board has a scheme for kids this year - www.ecb.co.uk/play/all-stars - it worked well at our local club and it's not the most competitive of sports especially at a young age...

parrotonmyshoulder · 26/03/2019 12:39

We do family classes at karate. It’s as intense (for DH and I who want to exercise and improve) or as fun (for DC who like the games) as you want to make it.

Cycling. Good for bonding, especially if there are snacks involved.

beebreath · 26/03/2019 12:41

I second cricket too.

Elzbells · 26/03/2019 12:51

Mine both box at a local boxing club and love it.

Needallthesleep · 26/03/2019 12:57

A bit left field but Crossfit Kids?

Cheesymonster · 26/03/2019 13:02

Judo. She loves it. Tried football but she wasn't keen.

HareTodayGoonTomorrow · 26/03/2019 13:04

Parkour

alendronicacid24 · 26/03/2019 13:06

Ice skating, roller skating, parkour, acrobatics, trampolining, cycling, athletics, running or fitness/circuit clubs and bootcamps usually available at weekends for the younger ages too. Some of these are family sessions so parents can join in too or fun sessions. Martial arts clubs vary hugely so you need to find one that suits but has huge benefits.

However definitely worth getting up for parkrun even if you as parents take it in turns - it is the best free activity for children and all about improving on their own time so gives huge satisfaction and fitness plus very social.

dameofdilemma · 26/03/2019 13:23

Thanks for all the posts, some great suggestions.

Dd does Beavers and ad hoc horse riding and sometimes goes for bike rides with dp so am now thinking maybe she can just do more of that!

There are local martial arts classes and will look into cricket too.
