Me:
-Get rid of zero hour contracts (so exploitive & unreliable for workers).
-Up the minimum wage to meet rising house prices/costs of food etc
-Make adult mental health care more accessible (5 sessions of CBT after a 9 month wait will unfortunately not cure my lifelong OCD & panic attacksHmm)
-Make housing more accessible for people (especially those on benefits when the ad for a rented place says no housing benefits, that's so unfair IMO)
-Lower uni costs (£9,250 is ridiculous)
-If shops are going to sell fruit + veg can they at least sell them in good condition that'll last at least 3 days? I'm sick of paying high prices for fresh food and then it going off before I can eat it (or even being in bad condition on the shop floor!)
-Ban plastic bags (yes even the 'bags for life' that probably 90% of us reuse only once before forgetting and buying more)
-Ban flying by private jet (I don't care how rich or in demand you are, stop adding to the pollution and just get on first classHmm)

What else? Smile

Make all concessions to retired people dependant on their tax credits award - I include free bus passes, reduced energy bills, free prescriptions etc.
Maternity leave should be inline with the time limit for income support. Both set at a full 12 months. If a baby is born before 37 weeks then the time should be added. Even better wages should continue as before until 37 weeks - it costs a lot to have a baby in SCBU.
If someone becomes British the tax and ni contributions they paid before hand should be counted not written off.
The whole family visa system needs an overhaul - try explain to children why there grandparents can not visit them.

With regard to free bus passes, I believe that the benefit outweighs the cost. It keeps people out of cars, it makes them healthier by getting them out more. When they do go out they put money into the economy, The free prescription should not be available to those on a higher tax rate. The Fuel allowance and tv licence should go only to pensioners who do not pay tax.

What you're describing, OP, is a socialist country. It sounds great to me. Unfortunately, after so many years of inculcation that capitalism is best and anything vaguely socialist is to be feared, it just isn't going to happen.

Backwoodsgirl · 26/03/2019 13:47

Socialism is not flavor of the month right now.

Maternity leave should be 12 months full pay from +/- 3 weeks of your due date. Babies born more than 3 weeks early should have the time added.

You should be able to choose which parent takes the leave after the initial 6 weeks.

Zero hours contracts should be illegal and all contracts must add up to the living wage pro-rata.

Politics and critical thinking should be taught in schools from age 7+

We should have an additional service: NHS, Fire, Police, Social Services and Mental Health Rescue. MHR would be both an emergency service and a liaison between social and health services.

All social care beyond the age of 70 should be free of charge whether it happens at home or in a care home.

Assisted dying should be legalised.

Residential homes should all have a pre-school attached to them and time with the elderly residents should be part of the curriculum for kids up to 5 years old.

Year 9 standardised testing should be abandoned and instead an entire school year should be dedicated to life skills like cooking, cleaning, money management, basic DIY and parenting. The second half of the year should be spent in work earning a wage which is then paid out to the earner to offset uni fees. If the child chooses not to attend uni, the money is offset against tax for the rest of their lives.

On that basis, university should be free but harder to attend.

All forms of regular commuting public transport should be free. You’d submit your proof of address and proof of employment and receive a free ticket for that journey. This would allow rural kids to get decent wages.

I'm not sure that anybody in politics is all that popular at the minute Grin

Agree with university tuition being free.

0 hour contracts should be made illegal. They are really unsettling for workers. I'm on a 0 hour contract for my job that I have to be super qualified too. One week I'm working 16 hours, then next week 24 hours, then couple of staff on holiday so my hours go up to 30 hours then back down to 14 hours! So awful! I haven't booked a holiday for myself and my children this year because of it, that coupled with Brexit and I will be moved over to Universal Credit at some point between now and 2021, it's all too stressful.

Norris Y9 standardised testing? Are you in Scotland/NI/Wales? We don't have that in England.

Knitclubchatter · 26/03/2019 14:40

More things made domestically, reduced imports from emerging nations.

Fathers should HAVE to pay towards the lives of their children
