Any vintage watch specialists about?

Bit niche I know!

I have found a watch (in my own home!) and I don't recognise the name of it at all. It's potentially 60 years old and it's solid silver. Where might I be able to get this looked at online? Is there a mumsnet of watches? Grin

Not a specialist I'm afraid. But could you post some photos of the front, back and strap/bracelet?

BatFace1 · 26/03/2019 11:26

Oh yes! Will do. Maybe someone might recognise it

The box says (I think ) Doubar Quinn and the watch itself says 'Quinn'

I have an interest in vintage watches, would love to see some photo's. Smile

Normally taking it to a jewelers or a specialist auction house is your best bet.

If you are in the Midlands, heading to the Jewelry quarter in Birmingham is a good idea & you may be able to get a few different opinions.

BatFace1 · 26/03/2019 11:33

@Bartlebysleftshoe have uploaded some pics so hopefully they're showing.

I'm honestly unsure of the age of it. Maybe 50s? Possibly 60s? Was probably my grandmas or great grandmas

This company might be able to help maybe? Also there are some Quinn watches for sale on eBay which might give you an idea. Disclaimer: I dont know anything about watches by the way, just googled to see what came up Grin

PineappleTart · 26/03/2019 11:37

I don't think it is as as old as you suspect. The date on the back might be a birth date and the watch was, perhaps a big birthday gift? Box just looks too modern. janchristianjewellery.com/product/paris-silver-watch-blank-3/

JMoore · 26/03/2019 11:40

What does it say on the face? I can't quite make out the name. Have you tried to Google this? My husband used to repair/restore watches of a certain brand as a hobby, and I have picked up a bit of an interest in them myself. I take it this is a manual watch, so not Quartz or automatic, to wind up?

SimonitesSocks · 26/03/2019 11:43

It's lovely. To my untrained eye it looks 1970s ish. I certainly remember in the mid/late 70s good quality Scandi products were becoming popular in the UK (although Quinn is a German company). If Pineapple is correct about the numbering on the back being a date (can't quite see it that clearly), it looks as though it was made in 1977.

BatFace1 · 26/03/2019 11:47

It's definitely older than 1977. I've sent a pic to my aunty and she confirms it as belonging to my grandma and says she remembers it when she was a child at home - and she's 67. Of course she may be mis- remembering! It does indeed look like an engraved date though doesn't it? It wasn't a birthday though or a wedding anniversary.

@JMoore it says Quinn

Google throws up some results but nothing much at all unfortunately

I've emailed the Noir folk so that is for that link

I know nothing about watches, but am learning about vintage/antique jewellery and the metal market. Silver is apparently hugely underpriced right now. I would find out exactly what the watch is, then sit on it until the silver price rises (if you are thinking of selling it).

BatFace1 · 26/03/2019 12:04

That's interesting @dearohdearohdear9 wasn't aware of that

I'll never sell it. It's part of my mums jewellery collection (vast, just huge) and it means everything to me.

Err I won't wear it though. It's very dated isn't it?

dearohdearohdear9 · 26/03/2019 12:09

If you divide the gold price by the silver price, its coming in at well over 80oz of silver to 1 of gold. The markets are waiting for a correction, as off the top of my head, the ratio averages at about 55 silver to 1 gold.

There are some who think that the supply of silver is going to dry up and are forecasting $1000 per oz in the future. Im not convinced, however you can be sure that the price will double within the next decade.

Im sure that one of your children/grandchildren will covet that watch in the future, its lovely just not fashionable right now. That will change.

JMoore · 26/03/2019 12:23

Ah yes, Quinn. They rebranded in the 70s, so I would date the watch from around that time as before they seem to have been "Quinn Scheurle", which was also put on their watch faces. I've only seen one or two of those though, and they were supposedly from the 60s.

The number on the back is most likely a serial number, not a date, I'd say.

BatFace1 · 26/03/2019 12:25

Maybe it is the 70s then as that makes sense @JMoore thanks. I don't think it's a special engraving signifying a date, think you're right about it being a serial number

OP posts:
SimonitesSocks · 26/03/2019 12:36

What are the numbers? Sorry, I can't really read them on your pic. I do have one watch which has its own unique ID number and came with a little card which shows the ID number and date it was purchased. Have you looked underneath the velvet 'holder' to see if there's a small piece of accompanying provenance?

I'm old enough that I would wear your watch - I don't care about looking dated Grin Grin

BatFace1 · 26/03/2019 12:59

There's no card unfortunately but on the back is ..

Quinn 925
071077
Water resistant
Swiss movt

OP posts:
BatFace1 · 26/03/2019 13:00

And ha, I'm also old enough to wear it and probably not look out of place but I just couldn't. Delusions of youth still probably

OP posts:
SimonitesSocks · 26/03/2019 13:39

Um, difficult. It could be a date or an ID number.

BatFace1 · 26/03/2019 15:41

I'm veering more towards an OD or serial number

I've had a response from the Noir website asking for pics as they believe it's definitely one of theirs so will wait and see
