Traditional lemon bon bons with lemony insides and lots of powder?

I’m having a hankering after the lemon bon bons of my childhood. They were nice and big and had a lovely thick coating of lemony powder and had a lemony toffee as well. All the ones I have tried lately are either tiny, have the thinnest covering of powder or are plain toffee inside (outrageous I know). Where can I get traditional proper lemony ones?

Oof yes they were lovely. They need to be chewy too and not too hard!! Following!

NeverHadANickname · 25/03/2019 13:24

The only place I have found that do the old fashioned bon bons that aren't hard and have a good flavour (although I dont like lemon) is Beamish in County Durham.

WeeMadArthur · 25/03/2019 13:41

@spaniorita, I pre warm mine on the radiator so that I don’t pull out (another) filling!

@NeverHadANickname don’t suppose you remember the makers name?

I don't. Beamish is an open air museum and they sell them in their little traditional shop so not sure if they make them or buy them in?

Polly99 · 25/03/2019 14:10

If you can wait for the post to deliver: a quarter of

needsleepzzz · 25/03/2019 14:14

Not sure if lemon toffee www.treasureislandsweets.co.uk/bonbons/lemon-bonbons.html

WeeMadArthur · 25/03/2019 15:41

Oh, god, there’s a bulk buy 3kg option! I really can’t justify that, can I?

Mamagin · 25/03/2019 15:43

Not until you've tried them first!

WeeMadArthur · 25/03/2019 16:27

Ive placed a (smallish) order with A Quarter Of, fingers crossed they are the real thing!

WeeMadArthur · 28/03/2019 18:57

Sadly the ones from A Quarter Of are not the real deal. They are soft and lemony but the promised thick lemony powder coating is but a memory. And now I have 600g to eat!

I love Vimto bonbons
A bit off piste but they're great.

thelikelylass · 28/03/2019 21:06

they were delicious, and they had toffee ones with a white outside and strawberry ones.
The thing i miss most is sweet peanuts, peanut shaped and with a really salty nutty centre. Not the nut free nonsense they sell today, but full of salt - mmmmm. my fabvourite ones.

thelikelylass · 28/03/2019 21:07

sorry for your lemon powder loss WeeMadArthur.

Villanellesproudmum · 28/03/2019 21:11

This shop is lovely, I’ve bought sweets whilst there and they have a website, however it says new recipe www.oldestsweetshop.co.uk/lemon-bon-bons-395

WeeMadArthur · 30/03/2019 19:51

I think I can spot the wrong’uns now, they are squared rather than rounded ( because they don’t have the lovely thick powder coating Angry )

I went to my local sweet shop yesterday and they have every bloody flavour of bon bon except lemon, haven’t had them for a year!

If I ever do find them I’m going to buy a whole tub!

WeeMadArthur there's an old fashioned sweet shop near me that sells them. If you'd like to pm me your address I'll happily send you some next week

@Justonedayatatime11 that’s very kind of you but I’ve got a feeling that the ones I remember aren’t made anymore.

Justonedayatatime11 · 01/04/2019 17:34

No worries, just thought I'd offer as we have a few traditional sweet shops here!
