Day in Cambridge - where to go?

Thinking of having a day in Cambridge (midweek). Will be on my own.

Recommendations of where to go please!

I've been with friends before and done the punting and mooched around. I like the architecture and gardens, which are the best colleges to visit? Can you walk by the river? Any quirky, lesser known places to go?

Fitzwilliam museum, folk museum, Kettle's yard art gallery, botanic gardens, Scott Polar museum, museum of archaeology and anthropology, sedgwick museum.

What things do like doing? Are you driving or taking public transport? (I wouldn't recommend driving, but if you are, then you could go to the centre for computing history off Coldham's Road, then find a car park and get a bus in.)

If the weather''s a glorious spring day like today, you could walk along the Backs and go round the Botanic Gardens. Kettle's Yard is fun. Fitzwilliam for a more formal gallery. Tons of museums with different subjects. Which colleges are open you'd have to check before going. Take a mooch down Mill Road for some different shops. The David Parr house on Gwydir Street opens soon, but I believe it's booked up for months.

What things are you interested in?

Newnham College (Prof. Mary Beard) has lovely gardens but I have no idea if they are open to the public. Architecture is late 1800s, very striking, by Basil Champneys. ~15 mins walk from the centre iirc.

Botanic Gardens are fabulous

Thanks for the suggestions

I will be driving. I was thinking there's park and ride? 🤔

Cambridge is well blessed with park and rides on most of the inbound A roads - and definitely use them, the city centre is intentionally an absolute arse to navigate in a car.

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 25/03/2019 13:37

Yes there is Park and Ride, so much better hsn finding a car park. I’ve only been to Cambridge once, but just looking at the Cam and the pints and the colleges is wonderful.

We went to Fitzbillies, which I was told is a must.

GoldPaperStars · 25/03/2019 13:41

Yes, definitely use a Park and Ride service. Also definitely go to Fitzbillies and have one of their famous buns (and then send me one - I miss them!). You can get to the river at several points and have a walk along. Lovely!

Newnham is pretty relaxed about letting people in, because it is slightly off the beaten track. I don't know if it is technically open to everyone or not, but given we're out of term, I would think they would happily let you wander. You can do a really nice walk through King's and over the bridge, and then you're very close. King's is sometimes open, though I could never work out the logic of when it was and when it wasn't.

You should also go to Michaelhouse Cafe - it's the most beautiful building, which used to be a church, and you can sit up high and look at the stained glass.

If you like pastries, go to Soboro - they do amazing danishes and I miss them so much.

Michaelhouse Cafe for lunch or afternoon tea.

If you enjoy architecture and music you might enjoy choral evensong in one of the college chapels. They are open to all and you dont have to be a christian or religious to enjoy them,
