Is this dress ok for a wedding reception?

I’m out shopping for a new outfit for a wedding reception I’m going to in a couple of weeks and have fallen in love with this dress. Do you think it’s ok for a wedding reception? It’s not as short on me as it is on the model (I’m only 5ft 4). I was thinking I would wear it with black tights and ankle boots. The reception is at a bar/restaurant so not a particularly fancy affair I’m guessing? It’s a nice bar! But not super posh.

Hmm, it doesn't seem special enough with black boots and black tights but I like making an effort for weddings as I never get dressed up other times 😂 where's it from, looks a bit cheap in the photo

Thecowinthemeadowgoesmoo · 25/03/2019 12:25

I like it! I'm getting married in two months and, as long as the people we care about are there to share our day, I really don't mind what they wear... But maybe I am too relaxed Hmm

it’s a nice dress but i don’t think wearing it with tights and boots is really ‘dressy’ enough for a wedding - even if it is just the reception.

It is absolutely fine for a reception of the sort you have described. People on MN angst too much over what to wear to weddings.

Meandmetoo · 25/03/2019 12:26

Absolutely fine op with the boots/tights. If you'll feel more comfortable/confident then even more so!

gwhizz75 · 25/03/2019 12:29

It’s from All Saints - doesn’t look particularly cheap in real life and the ruching hides all sorts of sins! I guess I’m thinking as it is in a bar, people might be dressed a bit more casually? Although I guess there will be people there who attended the ceremony and they might be dressed quite formally... Hmmm.

Think it's lovely and great for reception you describe. I probably wouldn't wear the black tights though and I'd wear with some nice shoes.

Palominoo · 25/03/2019 12:30

For a wedding reception at a bar it will be fine.

gwhizz75 · 25/03/2019 12:31

What would people wear with it if not tights and boots? Think I’d feel a bit exposed with bare legs Shock

It calls for nude rights and shoes.

Black tights and boots would be how you'd dress it down for work or a date maybe.

Meandmetoo · 25/03/2019 12:35

Nah, go for it op. I feel really comfortable in black tights and ankle boots, cba with tottering around on high heels just so i can 'look' a certain way for others.

Obviously if black ankle boots = caterpillar boots then maybe rethink that to a nice pair of modest heeled dressy kind of boots!

Bookworm4 · 25/03/2019 12:35

Bare tanned legs and some nice heels.

BlueMerchant · 25/03/2019 12:37

I'd probably choose sheer tights and maybe black or nude snakeskin high courts. I'd choose a bag to match the colour of dress.

sue51 · 25/03/2019 12:41

Its a nice dress and would be fine for a low key reception. I would go with sheer tights and heels as opposed to black with ankle boots.

LumpyPillow · 25/03/2019 12:42

Yes, black tights and ankle boots would be lovely!
Be comfortable. I wouldn't go bare legged and i never wear heels either. So I could literally never look 'dressy' enough for many peoples strange expectations. I think we all think when we go to weddings that there is going to be a police inspector shouting 'get out! Not dressy enough!'

BlueSaphire · 25/03/2019 12:44

The dress is nice and whilst some would opt for bare legs or light tights with shoes, lots of modern girls like the comfort of boots....so go with what makes you feel comfortable.
Just wear whatever with a smile. Smile

LumpyPillow · 25/03/2019 12:50

Some people really do act as though there's one rule for how you can dress. Its just a party after a wedding?! Why would that have to be any different than what you would wear on a night out, a date, a dinner, drinks in a pub... People should be able to be themselves with out all this stick up arse wedding clothes hitlerism. Grin

Have a good time OP!

Tenpercentgenius · 25/03/2019 13:03

I love this dress! And it sounds like it's not a formal reception anyway so you'll be fine.

Black tights and ankle boots are fine, but as long as the ankle boots are sexy with high heels, rather than clunky casual.

Have fun!

gwhizz75 · 25/03/2019 13:18

Thanks for all the feedback guys! It’s been one of those shopping trips where I’ve felt a bit rubbish in everything I’ve tried on and this was the first dress where I thought I actually looked quite nice in it. I don’t usually wear pink either so it’s quite a change for me! I ended up buying the dress but will do a bit of digging to see what others are wearing and if I feel like I’m going to look underdressed, I can always take it back (or just keep it for another occasion!).

I’ll try it on with a few boot/shoe options. I was thinking heeled boots rather than doc martins, yesGrin I’ve got a bit of a foot injury at the minute so not sure I’d manage teetering round in a pair of heeled sandals/courts all night - heeled boots are usually fine as more supportive. Thanks again!!

I like it and it would be fine with boots and sheer black or nude tights or bare legs. The fabric looks too light for black opaque tights but it may be different in real life.

caperplips · 25/03/2019 14:37

It's a lovely dress - heeled boots and very good quality sheer black tights - you will look fab!

feelingverylazytoday · 25/03/2019 14:53

I like it, and there's no reason why you should wear 'heels' if you don't want to. Shoes and boots don't need high heels to be smart and dressy.

gwhizz75 · 25/03/2019 17:34

Have tried it with a few different shoe options and I definitely feel best in the black tights and heeled boots combo. I’m thinking I’ll wear a black blazer type jacket too, will smarten it up a bit more.

Thanks for all the reassurance and I’m glad people like the dress. I think I’ll get a lot of wear out of it Smile
