Do you call it a die or a dice?

I have always called this a dice

But I was corrected today (very firmly, by a 4 year old, backed up equally firmly by his mother) and now learn that dice is indeed the plural of die. But nobody I know calls it a die! Not even my mother, who is reliably correct in evey matter!

What do you call it?

Oh I just realised that I always thought the saying was "the dye is cast", as in something has already been dyed a certain colour so there's no point wanting
It to be a different colour! Haha, silly me!

Myfoolishboatisleaning · 25/03/2019 05:51

Dice is correct usage for the singular. As a PP said, language evolves, and it is very important we tell —the parents of smug— four year olds this.

cariadlet · 25/03/2019 06:03

I've known for years that the singular is die but still say dice as it's such a common misuse that it sounds right. It's the same with PIN number.

But I am a stickler for using "less" and "fewer" correctly.

I use die but looked it up not long ago. Apparently die is still the correct formal singular but dice is a commonly accepted usage.

DappledThings · 25/03/2019 07:38

I also have a D4, D8, D10, D12, D20 and a D100

DH is a war gamer @occasionally but had never heard of a D100. He's now looked it up and is very impressed!

SweetPetrichor · 25/03/2019 09:22

I would call it a dice in general day-to-day, but die if I wanted to sound more correct.

notacooldad · 25/03/2019 09:24

Die.

LeekMunchingSheepShagger · 25/03/2019 09:26

I know that die is correct but I still call it a dice. I don't know anyone who calls it a die.

HappydaysArehere · 25/03/2019 09:26

Dice as die sounds daft. Especially as it is spelt dice.

borntobequiet · 25/03/2019 09:27

It's a die, so I call it a die.

jackparlabane · 25/03/2019 09:29

I call it a die around gamers. Around people who will go 'yer wot?' I say dice. With my kids I use both interchangeably.

Imagine playing Monopoly with a D100! GrinGrin

Toooldtobearsed2 · 25/03/2019 09:33

Do you say math, or maths?
I say dice, ruler and maths.

If my 3 year old granddaughter corrected me, i would laugh and say 'you are quite right dgd', whilst thinking' jog on clever clogs' 😁

I guess it's what you get used to.
I was bought up saying ' die'.
We play a lot of dice games at work and say things like 'can you ass the die' so it doesn't seem strange to me.

notacooldad · 25/03/2019 10:08

Do you say math, or maths?
Math. Following on from my other post, it's just what you are used to saying.
Things change and evolve over time. Habits die hard though!

Mookatron · 25/03/2019 10:12

Die. I'm not a twat (I've got one though). I wouldn't correct anyone because pick your battles.

notacooldad · 25/03/2019 11:31

Opps we don't say things like 'can you ass the die' at work. That would be wrong!!

StandardPoodle · 25/03/2019 19:47

Singular - die.
Plural - dice.
