How long for a toddler sprain to heal?

2yo DS fell badly at soft play today and seemed to hurt his foot, he's now limping. However he doesn't seem to be in pain, he's still walking around and doesn't complain when we move or squeeze his foot so I don't think it's anything too bad. We iced it and gave him a lazy day in front of the telly today. But I've not dealt with this before, any tips on how long it might take and when we should worry?

Oh bless him, these things can happen so easily, especially in soft play! No advice to give but didn't want to read and run. Resting it will definitely help. If he's still limping tomorrow then perhaps see your GP?

If he’s not weight bearing it needs checked. Unless there’s lots of pain and swelling it should be better in a couple of days and definitely inside a week. Toddlers are pretty stoic so err on the side of caution if he’s not walking normally in a couple of days.

Thanks - he's limping but he's bearing weight on it. There's no real noticeable swelling today so fingers crossed it's not too bad. I'll maybe see if it's not better on Tuesday?

DD (2.10) has sprained her ankle/foot twice in the past six months or so, both times she's been limping on it and the second times especially, saying it hurt a lot. The second time she had some bruising. Both times we took her to minor injuries after a couple of days to be on the safe side. The first time they X-rayed both her foot and leg and the second time they ummed and ahhed a bit before deciding not to as all the signs pointed to soft tissue injury. Apparently it is quite hard to tell at that age if it's a break or sprain but the second time they said she wouldn't have the range of movement she had if it was a break. Both times they said to go back in 1-2 weeks if she was still limping. But all seemed to heal up fine. Oh and both times (after we'd tried(!) to keep her as still as poss for the first day or two) they said it was fine to let her walk/run/go to nursery on it and that she would soon complain if she was in pain. And to give calpol/ibruprofen if she was in pain.

Not a medic but think it sounds sensible to see how it is in a couple of days (though with her first sprain I think it did take about 4-5 days before she stopped limping).

Oh and the second incident was also at softplay Hmm

Thanks Silver, that's really helpful - he has a good range of movement so we'll give it a few days and see if there's an improvement!

Ds took about a month
He was non weightbearing for the first 2-3 weeks, but no signs of problems on x-ray. Then when he started to walk, he had his foot twisted sideways and on tiptoes.
Then about a month after it happened he just put his foot down and walked normally and that was that.

We spent a lot of time in a&e (sent by gp) over that month as they and we were concerned.
