Is this conjunctivitis? Pic attached!

I'm in so much pain. My eye is so sore. It was very itchy but now I just feel like I need to apply pressure to it to take the pain away. It feels like there's something in it but there's not. It's been sore for 2 days but is worse now. I can't get to the pharmacy right now unfortunately.

This is as wide as I can open it. I take over the maximum prescription of a strong antihistamine daily because of another condition so it's unlikely to be caused by an allergy of any sort.

Help!

DH is on his way home from a weekend away so is going to stop off at a chemist for eye drops. I just hope he's home soon and that they kick in quickly 🙏🏼

Comparison to my other eye.

The other eye is actually slightly itchy. Just worrying it's going to get worse also.

It's hard to tell. Usually with conjunctivitis you have a crusting over your eyelashes when you wake up and can't open your eyes as it seals them shut (Vaseline before bed to help this) Have you put the eye drops in them yet?

PFB2 · 24/03/2019 18:35

The area around the eye is now so quite swollen. I did go for a little nap earlier and my eye was crusty when I woke from that.

The chemist was closed so I need to wait until tomorrow now for the eye drops. I'm a bridesmaid on Saturday so really need this to be better soon.

Go to pharmacy tomorrow they should give you some drops or eyewash that will help. In the meantime try a cold compress over the eye, I would boil some water and let it cool.

Also if you wear makeup, buy some new stuff as you could re infect your eyes, try not to touch your other eye in case you spread the germs and if you wear contact lens, take them out and get new ones.
You could also change your pillowcases daily until you are better.

It should be better soon, I think you will be fine by next Saturday.

longtimelurkerhelen · 24/03/2019 18:53

Sorry forgot to say, ask the pharmacist for the generic drops, as the brand names cost loads more for the same stuff. Hope it feels better soon.

formerbabe · 24/03/2019 19:56

If it was me, I'd be cleaning it regularly with cooled boiled water on cotton wool pads.

longtimelurkerhelen · 25/03/2019 16:20

@PFB2 How is your eye today?

PFB2 · 25/03/2019 20:13

Thanks for asking longtimelurker

They were very very puffy this morning (See pic) but have settled a bit. They are still sore though. The pharmacy gave me ointment for it so I've applied that a couple of times. The pharmacist was foreign and I also have an accent so communication was not the best. She didn't seem 100% sure about it being conjunctivitis and told me to see the GP if no improvement in 2 days time.

That's good, I think the ointment when I had conjunctivitis was applied a bit like eyeliner and made my eye all blurred for a while, I think it is the bacterial antibiotic medicine.

Your eyes do not look puffy to me, just the right one slightly puffy, but really not noticeable unless you draw attention to it. Hopefully it will start to get better now.

longtimelurkerhelen · 25/03/2019 20:41

You could always go all Jackie O and wear sunglasses on Saturday if all else fails. Grin But i'm sure you will be better by then.

PFB2 · 31/03/2019 23:22

So interestingly, we went away to go to the wedding and my eyes were completely normal100% while we were away. They were a little sore the first night we left home but by the next morning (Saturday) they were completely normal. Drove home today and now I'm like this 😩

Hayfever started early, perhaps you need anti histamine drops or take some syrup/ tablets if you have any?

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 31/03/2019 23:31

Did you have the window open when you were driving?

MichonnesBBF · 31/03/2019 23:31

Could you be having a reaction to something that has been changed recently?
perfume? husbands aftershave? washing powder? make-up?

Flowers are starting to bud now, although probably not the right time of year but hayfever? especially if they had flowers at the wedding.

BigGlasses · 31/03/2019 23:33

I would see an optician rather than a gp. My DH suffers from blephritis ( which subsequently causes lots of conjunctivitis ) and the gp couldn’t really help and said he would be a lot better seeing an optician. The local optician was great, he can write prescriptions and all sorts ( it was an independent rather than a chain but maybe all opticians can.?) definitely worth it. Optician is almost DH’s bff now!

Damnthatonestaken1 · 31/03/2019 23:37

Try applying a hot compress. I suffer terribly with my eyes - blepharitis / unknown allergy. Also get some eyelid wipes from the pharmacy (systane / blephaclean) but they are horribly expensive.

PFB2 · 31/03/2019 23:41

I take 4x 180mg of fexofenafine a day (fexofenadine is an antihistamine and the maximum dosage that a GP can prescribe is 180mg). I have a condition called chronic urticaria so my specialist has organised this dosage for me.

I was certain to start with that it couldn't be anything allergic because of all the antihistamines I take but now I'm not convinced.

I do carry an epipen which I have at my bedside just now. Will go straight to the GPS in the morning. The photo does not do the swelling justice. It's awful.
