Areas around York

Can anyone recommend good areas around York to live? We've been looking at houses in York and for our budget (£250-£300k) we haven't found anything suitable. They seem quite small with small gardens...

Looking for good primary school, pretty, shops or close enough to another town for access.

Which side of York? The traffic can be quite difficult so you don't want to be on the north side and getting in to the south, for example.

I live in a little village between York and Malton. Lots of nice villages out this way - Strensall or Haxby might be worth a look (though I think they can be pricey too), or the villages near them. If you get further out towards Stamford Bridge/Pocklington it gets cheaper, too, though frankly I would not live in Stamford Bridge.

Thanks, not sure. We're going to take a trip to York and want to visit potential areas we could move to so just trying to target specific areas.

Strensall or Huntington would get you a 3 bed semi for that budget, and are in the catchment for Huntington Secondary, which has an outstanding Ofsted rating. Huntington Primary is a good school, not sure about Strensall primaries. Huntington is also handy for Monks Cross, which is a shopping park, and is about to get a new swimming pool, Imax cinema, new football stadium etc. Haxby is another good possibility. Don't forget to check the flood map as parts of York flood

Haxby is great- it’s a quick bus ride to the centre of town and is a proper village with a high street, pubs, take away, Grocer, butcher etc.

Huntington always scared me a bit because it doesn’t really have a centre- it just seems to be loads and loads of houses. I always wondered if it’s a bit lonely. I don’t know though. Best thing to do is visit! And visit the schools too, if you get the chance to.

Elvington is a really lovely village great primary and Fulford catchment. 10 mins drive to monks cross shopping park or designer outlet in Fulford

Anyone?

Is Stamford Bridge not a great place to live?

sunshinerobots · 18/02/2021 10:54

@jaynesam Stamford Bridge is lovely - before lockdown the traffic was awful at rush hour as only the one bridge into the village. There is a lot of development which may impact school/doctors/shops but it is right on the wolds and has a lovely community.

Other areas to look at around there, Wilberfoss, Dunnington, Wheldrake, Elvington, Sutton on Derwent. All 20-25 mins to York and yet have benefits of village life and countryside living. Excellent schools in all of those

Hi, I live here. The issues in York are catchment areas, and also gardens are at a premium so houses with big gardens are v. expensive. Also lots of people coming from London want to be near the station and will pay extra for that. Villages to the East or South towards Selby are generally a bit cheaper. Strensall is nice, as people have said, quite a few estates, but a friendly feel overall: pub, shop and the Common is amazing. Some roads there are more trafficky than others. The house below is smallish but in a nice village and in the catchment for one of the best secondaries in the country. Good luck and happy to advise! I am a teacher so know schools, too.
