Want to go to Europe in May/June but worried about insurance, flights and getting stuck- also concerned about rising costs and whether or not we'd be better saving money in case food /bills rocket.

OP posts:

Was looking at Spain for May/June but after the events this week we may delay it, just because I don't want the hassle of problems that could arise.

They will have to deal with travel quickly then if and when we do leave however knowing our luck we'd be the ones stuck in an airport miles from home with two impatient DCs Grin

DHLostHisDWtoBrexit · 23/03/2019 18:35

@Mmmmbrekkie ultra cautious was probably the wrong choice of words. I'm more 'very aware' of Brexit. Read a lot of articles, have a small stockpile etc, but I also value my holiday time. You're only on this planet once, so decided to throw caution to the wind for this. Worst case scenario, we don't go but I'm thinking positive and it will all work out.

Mmmmbrekkie · 23/03/2019 18:37

Not even close to ultra cautious having read some of the threads on here!

Mmmhmmokdear · 23/03/2019 20:25

We booked Europe for July a few months ago. DH is very into doing his research and he wasn't concerned.

Iflyaway · 23/03/2019 20:34

you would be mad to go abroad without travel insurance in today’s world.

^^ This.

Shit happens every day, to everyone and in every country in the world.

No-one is immune.

Would you buy a house without taking out some kind of insurance? Of course not.

Backseatonthebus · 23/03/2019 20:34

Not only are we going on holiday in the EU, we're buying property in the EU. I strongly believe in living my life without fear, probably because we've lost too many people around us in the last few years. Maybe there will be delays and disruption, but we're not putting life on hold just in case, definitely not.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 23/03/2019 20:47

We've booked to go away in late July, but currently have only paid the minimum deposit on it, so we didn't lose too much if things went awry between now and then.

Lots online about flights probably still going ahead, at least initially, and we always book insurance as soon as we book the holiday. I'm fully aware there are lots of clauses about insurance not covering cancellation of flights due to brexit so I'm still a bit nervous in the back of my mind

I've also booked next year's 'summer' holiday to Italy in April, so I hope they've sorted it all by then!

isseywithcats · 23/03/2019 20:49

booked for spain in august and not worried at all spain is not going to want to lose the Uk spends in their country so cant see there been any problems

dimsum321 · 24/03/2019 06:47

Those of you relying on insurance, have you checked whether it actually covers delays cancellations caused by brexit chaos?

WhoTFIsAlanBrazil · 24/03/2019 06:53

We are not booking anything until we know what is happening with Brexit (but we definitely won't be holidaying in the UK, too depressing)

For those saying the E111 wasn't a good cover, we have always had travel insurance but a lot of policies assume that you are covered by the E111, and the insurance covers anything extra. It isn't yet clear whether the lack of E111 would invalidate these policies. So if you think you're insured, double check because you might not be in case of no deal!

MarshaBradyo · 24/03/2019 06:56

Yep Easter and summer - 6 months on passports and I always get travel insurance anyway

FinallyHere · 24/03/2019 07:02

@DHLostHisDWtoBrexit

we've taken out pretty comprehensive travel insurance.

That includes cover for political events?

Would be v v interested, who provides the cover?

Mmmmbrekkie · 24/03/2019 08:11

It will be fine
I have booked two and really looking forward to them.

God never even considered Brexit when booking holidays 😂😂😂 so many Sensible Susans

pinkmagic1 · 24/03/2019 08:24

We are due to fly back from Portugal on 22nd May! Not really worried. The world isn't going to stop turning.

WhoTFIsAlanBrazil · 24/03/2019 13:53

Of course planes will still be flying! A lot of people are missing the point: the possible issues are with travel insurance and health cover!

Everythingmagnolia · 24/03/2019 13:57

Spain at Easter. Not concerned

mrssunshinexxx · 24/03/2019 13:58

Yes booked didn't give it a second thought.
The world is not going to end and the sooner people realise that the less irritating it will be for those who continue to carry on as normal 👍🏻

Aragog · 24/03/2019 14:02

We are flying next weekend for a holiday. Booked it a while back. Not Europe, but it is abroad and it is flying and will require flying over Europe for part of the journey.

May - we are flying, but within England.

Not booked August yet but will do when we are back next month. Again, it's not to Europe but will require flying and flying over Europe too.

Aragog · 24/03/2019 14:07

Have to say that I have never travelled abroad without proper travel and health insurance. We've never relied on the EHIC, or previously the E111.

Infant when I did need to get medical treatment the hospital we ended dup going to didn't accept EHHIC anyway so we had to use travel insurance. We could have contacted the company there and then and had it activated whilst there, but this would have been time consuming and more hassle, so we paid by Credit Card and claimed when we got back.

Backseatonthebus · 24/03/2019 15:03

A lot of people are missing the point: the possible issues are with travel insurance and health cover!

What point are we all missing? The current advice is to buy travel insurance, as before, to ensure you are fully covered. That's what most people do now surely - have an EHIC and travel insurance.

If we have a no deal, then the EHIC might go, but travel insurance still covers you anyway.

Backseatonthebus · 24/03/2019 15:05

And just to add if people have been travelling using nothing other than EHIC, then more fool them really.

tinytemper66 · 24/03/2019 15:10

Booked my cruise last September for this July

tinytemper66 · 24/03/2019 15:13

I have always taken out insurance which luckily for us , my husband had a heart attack in Bruges and whilst we had our ehic card we still had to pay over £300 in costs including the emergency ambulance ride. With our travel insurance we have recouped all the money.

gubbsywubbsy · 24/03/2019 15:14

I booked last year to go to the canaries in July .. it not worried .🤷‍♀️
